Dog Kennel with Concrete Slab - Converted?

Our property has a large preexisting dog kennel with concrete slab we'd love to covert into a chicken coop/run. With the concrete slab, what is the best type and how much of substrate do we need to put down for them to still be able to scratch, etc.?

I poured a concrete slab to build my coop on, and I recommend everyone use the deep litter method. My coop is 12x8', on the concrete I bust 5 bales of pine shavings. Every week to 10 days I add organic matter, be it pine straw, hay, or grass clippings. totally clean out the coop every 6 months and start over.
