Dog killed 3 of my girls

Yes I know how to shoot a gun, my husbands rule if we have it in the house you must know how to use it!! I am a pretty good shot too! I am not bitter any longer I just don't have anything to say to her. She should stay away and not bring her dog anywhere near my house!!!

sorry, that DOES sound a bit bitter. Sadly, she has a right to walk anywhere in the neighborhood she pleases and there really isn't anything you can do about it. You don't ahve to like her, but don't let her presence get to you either. Take a deep breath and smile nicely (wishing that the witch would be eaten by her own dog under your breath ;))

Oh, I am so sorry for you. I know what that feels like to have a dog kill you pet birds.. My own dog killed one of my hens for no reason, out of the blue, after living with them for 2 years with no problems. I was heartbroken.

However, this situation just sounds like a sad mistake. The owners of the dog are very good to pay you that money. Its not the dogs fault, they don't know its wrong to kill the chickens. I hope the dog owner will take more care of her dog. Perhaps the invisiable fence thing was just turned off by accident or broke.

Learn form this.....if that dog can get into you garden ...then any dog can! Make you fence dog proof, and your hen house. If that dog comes back, then its a different story, and you can take more action. Tell the owners that you have rat poison on your land and if the dog gets into you yard then it might eat it. That should make them keep the dog under control if they care about it.

Best idea yet!

I too am in Virginia and it is a livestock friendly state. I am in a rural setting and when my butthead neighbor kept letting his GSD come over and chase my horses, though I kept warning him that I get a clear shot I will shoot her, he thought it was funny. I even watched him tell her to come get one of the horses one afternoon so I had animal control give him a talk to, who backed up my threat that I can and I would shoot the dog, I was in my legal right to do it. That at least stopped that.

I have found that people just do not understand that many of us view our chickens as pets, we get them when they are little cotton balls with legs, we nurture, raise, and heal our animals if they are sick. They are our pets.

I am with you on shooting the dog if it comes over again. It is a very hard lesson to learn but, my Siberian Husky is on a lead because she will kill small animals or chase larger ones, and I ensure that she stays that way. I am a very responsible pet owner, I expect others to be just as responsible and if they can't be, then they shouldn't own animals.

What a cruel thing to do......shoot the dog?! It does not know any better. Shooting it would not help anyone, the owners may get very nasty, they will also just buy another dog. People love to blame the animals, when its the owners who are at fault. Also, I am sorry to sound rude, but the owner of the chickens also has to take some responsibility by protecting the birds in a predator proof garden and run/coop.

Think how you would feel if someone shot you dog. Mistakes will happen, thats life. One day your dog might get out . someone working on your property leaving a door open, a friend visiting leaving a gate open, possabilities are endless.......

I don't know why I keep opening this thread when I am trying to avoid it!!! So here goes, are you over reacting? You bet! Now that you are somewhat calmer and have asked, I am answering. Ultimately, when I loose a chicken, it is my own fault, for having not found that tiny breech in my coop, not having strong enough fencing, whatever. Chickens get killed by all sorts of things, and even when they are safe, disease can happen. It sounds like this op is more than willing to make ammends and rebuild fences but you are being very hard hearted and not letting her...what kind of example are you setting for your children? If your chickens were really so gosh darn important you should have protected them better! You are angry, but you have another issue that you are more angry about that you feel is out of your control and this is misdirecting you. I think your probably a usually nice person but boy would I avoid you now! Please do some soul searching and find out what's really the problem....tentatively, good luck.

I would feel horrible if someone shot my dog. I would feel responsible that he was dead. If he was attacking livestock, I wouldn't say anything to the shooter. It's a fact of life. Dogs who attack livestock die. It's called "be responsible for your dog" I have multiple layers of protection, including having my dogs trained to the boundary of the yard and a reliable recall. I refuse to lock my birds in and not allow them to free-range. Yes, I do know that I may lose some to predators, though the only free-range killers have been neighbors' dogs.

What I expect is for my neighbor's to be responsible for their pets. Instead, they leave them to roam and kill at will. They've growled at people, killed cats, killed other dogs, jumped my fence yard and tried to get into my house. Nope, i don't think twice about shooting a dog that is attacking ANYONE in my family, and that includes the animals.

Got to agree with the above poster. We've all heard the "dog doesn't know any better" defense of the dog. Same can be said of a dog that attacks a child, I suppose. Poor doggie. The only reason anyone defends dogs in this instance is that they are attacking chickens. Were it your toddler or most other targets, no one would likely say "poor dog."
