Dog- need advice.

If someone wants to take him, fully knowing his history, I'd be VERY worried that they were planning to fight him or at least use him to kill things for entertainment.
Even if it were possible to rehabilitate him, better to put that time and energy into multiple dogs, none of which are a potential threat to children, than put it into this one dog who is and probably always will be dangerous.

That's like saying it's inhumane to not duck hunt your lab. Zoos do the same with wild animals and people pay to go see them. What a hypocrite
First off, BYC is a forum where we all express our opinions, ideas, concern, excitement, and such; not where we call each other names. Thank God my parents raised a strong and intelligent gal. I can take it, but some can’t. I am the furthest thing from a hypocrite. You don’t know me so you’ll just have to trust me on that one.

I’m not following your analogy of it being inhumane to duck hunt my lab. My son trained and did duck hunt with our male, now 11 and past his prime. He is a retriever. He never killed a duck, my son did.

And zoos, yeah I hear you on that one. Not good IMO. When animals constantly pace back and forth in any enclosure that signifies problems. And we wonder why elephants go rogue?

I’m sorry my post got you riled up. It was intended to be informative and of my opinion.

This whole situation sucks. I am so sorry you are going through all of this. If you were where I live in California, there are many dog rescue organizations that would take him and either rehabilitate him for rehoming or keep him. People here are dog crazy and will do just about anything to prevent euthanasia. It's a shame you and your family have put so much into this dog only to have him "go rogue' (a very good analogy form a previous poster). Is there anything like that where you are? I would think a Pyrenees rescue would take him.

It is a crappy situation! I hate that we are having to even consider putting him down. We have rescued many of animals himself inclued as a small pup.
Unfortunately there are not any shelters or facility that has been willing to take him. Due to the fact he has harmed other dogs mostly.
I wish I could have found some but our area is very rural and even the bigger towns don't have much resources in that aspect.

Then I would put him down, too, fwiw. You will sleep better, your marriage will be righted, and your neighbors will be relieved. And your little ones will be safer! Gosh, I really am genuinely sorry.

I had a dog once that survived distemper as a pup and was forever brain damaged. She was impossible to train because of it. She attacked a neighbor's dog, but we intervened before it got too out of control. We ended up putting her to sleep because there was nothing we could do. I still look back - nearly 3 decades later - and wonder if I did the right thing. Broke my heart.

Really, what we say here doesn't really matter - especially anyone who is judgmental. You do what's best for you and your family. That's the very definition of parenthood, right?

As an aside - makes me think of Cujo (the book, not the movie). It's tragic....

And honestly - I think it's the wacky hippie-dom that is California. I kid you not, this is a seriously beautiful state, but the West Coast is known for being uber touchy-feely. LOL!

I like what you’ve said and how you’ve said it. :thumbsup The relief from the stress of this situation will be immediate and profound for them I’m sure.
