Dog- need advice.

So many responses!

Rehoming isn't an option! No one wants a dog with these problems. Besides the fact we live in farmland and everyone is worried about their livestock offspring being killed by him also. No shelters will take him due to aggressive behavior.

Unfortunately around here behaviorists are not common I would have to ship him someone and pay a fortune to hope that it worked!

I think yall have assured me that we are making the right decision! Thank you all for your responses and even a few that made me LOL at a bad situation.
Haha what dog!

In a case such as this, I would call animal control and ask that they come out to get him and put him down. Tell them you are frightened of the dog and afraid he’ll attack your children.

I’d be seriously concerned about the simple act of getting him TO the vets ... out of the car, into the waiting room etc without him attacking another animal.

Thinking back to when I was at the vet a few weeks ago, it was all old people there that morning with their pets. Definitely not a group of people prepared to leap out of the way of a dogfight !

Has this dog shown any aggression towards a human? Ever?

As owners of this dog, what do you do to exercise him--mentally and physically?

Dogs need more then just a yard, they need mental and physical exercise. Has he ever had any training?

My older GSD was brought in to a high kill shelter because he was "nipping" the kids. I brought him home to a houseful of kids and never once did he attempt to nip, mouth or herd them. In fact he adores kids, they are his most favorite thing in the world. He would do anything for them. He does not like other dogs outdide the home. When he goes to the vet, they clear the area because people don't pay attention and let their dogs go 20 ft on a flexi leash. We had intense training for this, 4 hours a day for about 4 months. He now tolerates dogs when we are out and about but I still don't trust the owners of pets at the vet. They are in lala land while I'm worried about my dog killing theirs and trying to prevent it.

The point is that we don't know if this dog is getting what he needs in this home. He very well may turn into a different dog in another home or with new improved management, training and exercise.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out! I know the end won't be a happy ending... but I have a lab/pyr mix too, and am starting to wonder if this particular mix of dog is problematic. No issues with mine yet, except he tends to run off. He's just a big oaf, not very bright but a sweet dog.

He has definitely been on edge with guests. He gets put in a kennel when we have people over. His collar doesn't allow him to go in the front of the house just the back few acres. But I still OPT for the kennel when we have people over riding out in the arena.
But this weekend our 3 year old was on his nerves a bit and made a fast movement at her. No teeth or open mouth but it made me nervous enough to put him in the kennel.

He is a sweet dog to myself and my husband! Just not so much anything else. He also had a problem of running off before we moved to this new place. I thought neutering would help but then all these other issues started. :/ Hopefully yours doesn't follow the same suit!

I think being honest with yourself about this particular dog shows responsible thinking.
I commend you for that.

I am a HUGE fan of big dogs.
That being said I agree with others that this particular dog should be euthanized.

Reality is that you have a toddler and a baby on the way.
That definitely reduces time available to work intensively with this one dog in hopes that he MAY be able to be rehabilitated.

Seriously, I fully understand that this is NOT an easy decision.
:hugs

Sorry I only saw the first part of the message!

Yes he has had training. He went to work on the ranch with my husband from a pup, he was trained for back of trucks. He follows in line with Horse rides and behaves like a decent dog. He knows all commands such as sit lay drop fetch shake. He knows heal also.
He has a large area not just a backyard. We have a few acres he is still allowed to roam despite his collar.

Our Bloodhound has been raised the same as him and is in no way shape or form showing aggressive behavior. She is a wonderful dog.

I can appreciate where you’re coming from here, and respect your opinion but I’ve worked as a dog trainer in the past. I am a champion of the underdog. I HOPE that a dog can be “turned around”.

I’m also a mom who’s raised four loud rambunctious kids (although they were taught from the beginning to treat animals with gentleness and respect) but I have to disagree you- in this particular case.

There’s a difference between an under-exercised or mentally unstimulated animal nipping and showing behavioral problems, and a dog turning into a killing machine.
And to attempt to rehome him would be unconscionable, bordering on criminal.

So I have a Lab and Great Pyrenees mix. He is 3 years old and is neutered. He never had agression towards other animals till we moved to our new piece of land a year or so ago.
Since moving here he has killed alot of things. Our chickens free ranged and then one day we came home to half the flock about 10 dead. We stopped that by keeping them in the coop, but he got through the neighbors fence and killed all theirs too.
After that we completely fenced our property in nonclimb 6 foot wire and nothing is around the fence for him to use to get out.
Well that was the beginning. He killed all the rabbits on the property which was fine since they were pests. Then some stray cats I think 3 so far which came into the property.
Now here is my biggest issue he has now killed 4 dogs. All of them have came into our property and into his allowed zone from his collar. We have him centered in the property with a shock zone collar to prevent him escaping the property on top of a very secure fence. He is not allowed to be close to any of the perimeter fencing by like 25 feet.
This past week was his latest victim and I have been aruging with my husband for a week on how to handle this situation.
Despite the fencing and zone collar he is still killing things.
We have a small child with another on the way and I am worried this aggressive behavior may transfer to kids too.

I feel like he has done enough to be euthanized. Please help! Give some advice or reassure us that this is the right decision.

I don’t know squat about chickens yet (that’s why I am on here) but I DO know dogs. As sad as it is ... this dog is going to continue killing and needs to be euthanized tomorrow. I am amazed that you have allowed him to live this long. He isn’t going to stop, don’t wait until it is one of your children ☹️
