Dog- need advice.

If someone wants to take him, fully knowing his history, I'd be VERY worried that they were planning to fight him or at least use him to kill things for entertainment.
Even if it were possible to rehabilitate him, better to put that time and energy into multiple dogs, none of which are a potential threat to children, than put it into this one dog who is and probably always will be dangerous.

I do not think this is accurate. It went through my mine to attempting the salvage the dog based the description so far. Lumping me like that is not accurate.

There's a pretty big difference between an enclosure in a good zoo, and the average dog run. Besides that, zoo animals are born in enclosures, it's the only normal they know, but this is a dog that used to have a lot of room to roam.

That's not at all true as zoos participate in Rehabilitation for animals. That means from the wild, to the zoo and back. You don't know first hand how the dog is acting. Probably just needs trained different

Our vet is a friend of the family I think I'm going to talk to him about everything. And get his personal opinion before it's a done deal. Unfortunately around here there aren't many dog trainers for behavior. I mean if you want a hunting dog sure or a livestock dog but that's about it.



Yup it's a hard call between he is just protecting to can it go further to human accident.
I don't want to get sued for someone's dog getting it if it does end up belonging to a neighbor!! That's the crappy part even though we took precautions to keep him in our property if someone's dog dies here they can still sue us for property damage. :/ Stupid law.




I have witnessed an attack I was able to stop that easily before the dog was hurt. All the other times I have either came out of the house to find it somewhere or gone at the time.
They were all small to small medium dogs. He is large 100+lbs.

The previous home had an enclosed backyard that he stayed in due to it being off a very busy road. We didn't want him to get hit. He was socialized with other animals we took him everywhere. On trail rides with dogs of all sizes, chickens, cats...
When we came here all of a sudden he decided to chase the chickens one day. Despite being disciplined over it he just kept going on to other stuff and then dogs. We have no idea what happened. I think once he got that drive to kill after the Chickens he just can't control it anymore.

Double check the laws where you're at, South Carolina even if a dogs on a leash and another dog gets within reach of that leash or human gets within reach of that leash or a kennel then it's on the other parties

Now I will say it will be a bad day for anyone who enters my gated property without the knowledge of us. My seven dogs will see to that. However, not one of them would or has ever killed anything, let alone a person. Once these dogs know we are okay with the visitor(s), they are okay with them too. They are protective, not aggressive.

And that's all that dog is being protective, minus the one chicken incident

First off, BYC is a forum where we all express our opinions, ideas, concern, excitement, and such; not where we call each other names. Thank God my parents raised a strong and intelligent gal. I can take it, but some can’t. I am the furthest thing from a hypocrite. You don’t know me so you’ll just have to trust me on that one.

I’m not following your analogy of it being inhumane to duck hunt my lab. My son trained and did duck hunt with our male, now 11 and past his prime. He is a retriever. He never killed a duck, my son did.

And zoos, yeah I hear you on that one. Not good IMO. When animals constantly pace back and forth in any enclosure that signifies problems. And we wonder why elephants go rogue?

Sorry you are going through this.

Euthanasia is the biggest gift you can give. A deep sleep, while being cuddled by his humans.
The worst thing to do is reforming-how stressful for the dog! And also, you are putting the community at risk by doing so.

Euthanasia is not something take lightly, but it is the responsible thing to do, for the dog, and for you.

I have dogs, I have kids, I have a whole darn menagerie over here. I have had many second/third homes dogs with behavioural issues. Trust me when I say, it never gets better, it gets worse.

I commend you for considering Euthanazing him. I believe it is the kindest thing you can do.

This dog was a bad fit for current owner / situation, from the start. Dogs more often than not require resources and a mindset that is appropriate for their needs.

Euthanizing is not a gift. It is a release, and in many cases when used on the animal, it is a selfish release for the human in charge that wants to simply move on because tired to situation.

I love this came down to it's your fault as a a dog owner from some people. I have had many dogs and none of them have ever had these issues. Including the other dog I own right now. She will not partake in the behavior. She is an amazing dog who I trust around all other animals and people.
He was a great fit for our family until the day he decided to chase things and kill things. Since then he is a completely different dog. Sorry that has nothing to do with being a bad fit from that start considering he was 3 when this started happening and we have had him since a small pup.
I don't know if neutering him is what changed him or if he just realized chasing things to kill was fun etc... But no that is not my fault for "lack of training" or mindset, when he has had more training than ALOT of other common household dogs. Considering I have been fighting this behavior with him from the beginning of it trying to solve the problem no I'm not being irresponsible and just taking the easy way out because I don't "want to deal with it any more"
Because I haven't already said we feel awful for even considering it given we have never had a dog with these issues.

I had a mcnab that use to bite he was a working dog that was his nature. (This was before kids.) He bit me more times than I can count.
I took every precaution to keep him from his triggers and warn people that he was not a petting dog he was never allowed around children. If kids were gunna be around he got a muzzle. He was not my favorite dog by any means. He was actually a pretty big ass. We kept him until the day he died....

Your dog, your decision, period. Never mind the naysayers. I’m sorry there has been such negativity on this thread. This isn’t usual for BYC so please don’t let this run you off. FWIW I have received some very valuable chicken advice from some of the ones who have posted here against euthanization. Unfortunately, euthanasia is such a touchy subject and sparks deep rooted feelings from most people. Some just see it much differently.

So I have a Lab and Great Pyrenees mix. He is 3 years old and is neutered. He never had agression towards other animals till we moved to our new piece of land a year or so ago.
Since moving here he has killed alot of things. Our chickens free ranged and then one day we came home to half the flock about 10 dead. We stopped that by keeping them in the coop, but he got through the neighbors fence and killed all theirs too.
After that we completely fenced our property in nonclimb 6 foot wire and nothing is around the fence for him to use to get out.
Well that was the beginning. He killed all the rabbits on the property which was fine since they were pests.Then some stray cats I think 3 so far which came into the property.
Now here is my biggest issue he has now killed 4 dogs. All of them have came into our property and into his allowed zone from his collar. We have him centered in the property with a shock zone collar to prevent him escaping the property on top of a very secure fence. He is not allowed to be close to any of the perimeter fencing by like 25 feet.
This past week was his latest victim and I have been aruging with my husband for a week on how to handle this situation.
Despite the fencing and zone collar he is still killing things.
We have a small child with another on the way and I am worried this aggressive behavior may transfer to kids too.

I feel like he has done enough to be euthanized. Please help! Give some advice or reassure us that this is the right decision.

There is no shame in euthanizing an animal that is a danger to property, including living property. It happens.
