Dog needs put down. We would rather let him go peacefully at home.

I had to take my sweet Lucy to be put down a few months ago. She really perked up and seemed happy to be going somewhere....no stress there and certainly didn't show any stress going into the vets exam room. So much so that he did a double take and asked me why I was putting her down! A quick exam showed the reason and he was happy to oblige and didn't even suggest that I leave the room.

She was held safely in my arms and I was amazed at how quickly and peacefully she slipped away. Just one sigh, immediate relaxation and she just fell asleep in my arms. I had always thought I would give her the hand of mercy at our home and would likely just shoot her in the head but when it came right down to it, I could not mark that beautiful head if I someone had held a gun to me and tried to make me do it. I am so very glad for my decision and it didn't cost much at all....I'd have paid four times as much just to see her slip away so peacefully.

Please find a vet to come to your home or take her to the vet's office~someone who will let you attend his death...make it a pleasant jaunt with plenty of kind words, pettings and treats. You won't regret it.

I always sedate my animals first, more expensive yes - but there's a far less chance of missing a vein (my vet missed once in 5 cats- she was extremely arthritic so that didn't help him any).

I have a new mobile vet now that's how the cats and pup will go in 12-15 years...

My son and I took our Max to the vet this morning. Max loved the vets office and everyone there, so he was not nervous being there. He was a little out of sorts because with his bum back legs he couldn't get any footing on the table. My vet gave us the option of staying in the room or leaving-I was not going to let my Max go alone, so we stayed. It was over in less than a minute. My Max left this world peacefully, and with his people around him. He went down and didn't move even a twitch. I was grateful for that.

Last night, I made Max his own T-bone steak, with a baked potato and sour cream. He gobbled it all up in less than 10 minutes and had the most joyful look on his face when he was done. He kept that look on his face till the minute he went to sleep. He will remain in our hearts forever.

You made the hardest, most unselfish choice anyone who has ever been owned by a dog has to make.
He's in a lot of good company of the many wonderful pets who have passed, as well.

Bless you and your memories of Max:)
For other's info: We took our old gal to a friend's farm during their regular farm vet visit. After the farm work was done, the vet gave our gal her final injection. It was much less traumatic than an office visit. It might be an option if you have farm friends with a willing vet.

Thank you all once again for your thoughts and ideas.

We convinced the local vet to send someone out to our house. We are having Jabber put down next saturday.
We will be burying him in the cemetery of lost pets here on the property.
