dog problem..need help..Warning:somewhat graphic content and questions

Very sad story indeed.

It is interesting varied advice depending of what state people live.

People from NY advice: do not take law in your hands, shooting the gun in neighboorhood may land you in jail.
I would add, in states like NY talking about guns may get you in trouble LOL.

People from South NC, FL advice:

"Shoot him, bury him and don't say a word. Your daughter's life is much more important than the dogs. Once a dog kills there is no stopping him. He will continue to kill. The owners would not have any remorse or appreciation if u take the trouble to tell them of their dog's death. Save urself the trouble."

I second that if you live in gun friendly state. I live in Fl own guns and will shoot any animal or human entering my property and threatening my family including my birds.

The minute that shepard mix growled at me I would have been on the phone with the sheriff. That dog should be put down as it sounds like it is human aggressive.
I wouldn't shot the dogs yet until the sheriff saw the tape with the dog getting the chickens, then if nothing is done next time the dogs are on your property fire away. Its to bad we can't shot the owners.

I would rather shoot the owners( I live in SC and either I or my gun toting neighbors would), but the best thing is just shoot the dogs. Then take the carcase back to their door at night.this will stop them from just letting them go anywhere they wanted to.I myself would shoot them without thinking because my family doesnt need to be inside afraid of some stupid persons neglect and responsibility.

If it was up to my great grandpa,he would skin it,set it on fire and run it back to its home.Thank God I am not as severe.

Completely and totally untrue. I abhor this BS about traps. Leghold traps do not permanently do damage to an animal that it's targeted for. This is a P.E.TA myth. Think about it, would trappers want to ruin the furs that they're trapping to SELL and make money? No. VERY often trapped animals are found asleep.

The only time traps do damage is if they are the wrong size for the species. If you are looking to catch a dog, then you get a fox/coyote leghold and almost any size dog from 25-60 lbs or so. Trap the dog and hit them where it hurts most, in their pocketbook.

Exactly. If you have a fox/coyote trap, and catch a cat or smaller dog, the animal could lose its leg. I know this one - DH trapped for years, and has had it happen. My SIL had a 3-legged dog because of a leghold trap. That doesn't meant that EVERY animal would be maimed. Why take chances? A live trap is just less traumatic for the unintended target, IMO.

Have you ever seen the leg on a yote or fox? Most CATS have bigger legbones, so the risk is MINIMAL at best.

Tell me, what was the story on your SILs dog and what breed? I'm betting it was off leash and where it wasn't supposed to be. Just sayin...

A live trap is no less traumatic, as the animal is STILL trapped. Trapped is trapped.

BeckahBear: Sorry - I didn't mean to start something that would hijack your thread. You need to do what you feel is best in your situation, and do what's most comfortable for you. I was only offering my opinion on how and why I would handle a similar situation as yours. I hope you can get rid of the dogs one way or another.

Wolfwoman: I have no intention of starting a debate. Just stating my opinion. The dog was a small terrier-mix, on their own property (farmland with many acres - if you were to drive past any place around here, there are no dogs "on leash". Everyone knows their neighbor's dogs, and the dogs all know where they belong - those that wander don't last long, especially if they're causing problems). There was an area that was being trapped, dog got caught. One of those "unintended targets" I was talking about. I'm not anti-trapping, and you're right. Trapped is trapped. Some animals are found sleeping in the traps. They do wake up. Personally, if I have to release an animal from a trap, I'd rather be able to open the door and hope it just leaves rather than try to spring a leg-hold on an animal that could be scared or hurt and not wanting me that close. Not saying I'm right or that you're wrong. Once again, just stating my opinion. 'Nuff said.

If you are going to shoot the dog, don't trap it first. That could get you into serious trouble. Shooting a dog who is harassing livestock is one thing............shooting a dog who is trapped and no danger to anyone (at that moment) is animal cruelty. No sense in going to jail over it. Shoot it in the process of "harassing" livestock aka chickens, and you also have the video of it killing your chicken as proof that it is indeed a danger to your livestock.

If you can catch the dogs in a live trap... then just bring it to the shelter(in the trap) and say its a stray thats been coming on your property and killing your livestock... and that its been human agressive too! Most likely they will just put it down... or find the owners and fine them BIG time.
