Dog rips both her wings off!!!

I know you don't want dog comments, but with all due respect and compassion I have to say that your problem dog is at the root of this horrible incident. I know that you're in a very unpleasant position here and it must have been very traumatic for you. Still, I think it's important to recognize the causative facts, and the fact is that your dog is uneducated and uncontrollable, which isn't a fun state of affairs for anyone concerned, including the dog.

A well trained dog is a free dog. A well trained dog is an *educated* dog that can be relied upon to exercise good judgement and behave appropriately. A well trained dog can truly participate in the life of the family, and will accept responsibility for other animals belonging to the family.

But a dog that has to be penned, that is not trained beyond the level of distraction, that cannot be controlled either from a distance or even from close up, that dog is not a fun dog to own and I sure wouldn't want one living next door to me.

There are a lot of nice, sensible, civilized dogs out there looking for homes and getting euthanized every day. I had an unreliable dog once so I have some sympathy for your position. Boy, it's tiring when you have to be aware of where the dog is and what it is doing at all times, and eventually it makes for some difficult decisions. But I now have a dog who is sweet, loving, and very responsible. She is a joy to me instead of a problem.

Zookeeper, I absolutely got that but I did have experience with a similar situation I believed to be relevant. I wasn't trying to come across disrespectful. I think the op is genuinely concerned for her bird and is getting all the help she can get from a forum and I am not trying to detract from that...was just stating the obvious...
If an animal won't stop when asked...or wrestled to the ground, isn't that is out of control

Please do not attack me for making my point. I don't know all the circimstances and neither do you so don't accuse me of being without compassion. An animal has been mutilated and I and Im trying to let this person know that it very well may happen again no matter how wonderful your intentions are.

Out of control and pitbulls do not mix

Peace

Birds may not feel pain in the same way as we do but they most definitely still feel pain !!

The longer you are leaving your bird the more likely infection is taking hold ... phone a vet if you are not sure about the best antibiotic to use and dosage. You really need to make a decision as to sorting it out or taking the hen to a vet to get things done properly.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes but this seems to have turned into a dog/fighting thread. I will be more than happy to percitipate in a thread about dogs but it will have to be at a later date, after I get my chick well. I really think after you hear the whole story about my dogs you will change your minds and if not you will atleast have some compassion for for my story.

Amoxicillin is the drug i'm going with and I was lucky to have a fresh script. I also was lucky enough to get through to dhlunicorn and she was kind enough to give me some sound advise to go on. I'm trying everything she has suggested and for the first time since this terrible event happened I think Sadie has a chance. I need to go back and check on Sadie again now but I will return in a few with pics. Please be patience for I have dial up and it takes forever to upload. Thanks again for everyone who is praying for us.

Sad to say, not many vets in the U.S. treat `backyard' poultry. Often, it is a matter of doing the best one can with what one has at their disposal. There are only six avian vets in Missouri and two work with nothing but exotics (parrots for example). We were extremely lucky to find a vet in Columbia who, though not an `approved' avian vet, at least has her undergrad. degree in poultry science.

However, there might be a chance a free phone consultation might be wrangled so I'll put up link to Avian Vet. search (8 in Alabama).

Photos of injury really would be very helpful...

Hey everyone, just a reminder that Chillin In Muscadine requested that this thread stay away from the whole dog thing...she's having a tough time, and can only handle so much. She cares dearly for both her chickens and her dogs, and until this crisis is over the dog won't be discussed by her except for in whatever way she can handle. Please just be here to listen, and keep any personal views out of the way for now. Stay positive right now, everything else can be addressed later.

Also, Sara, the people on here have pretty much given u all the sound advice you need and then some! Hopefully other people may have more experience and advice to aid in her recovery. I know I wish I had something to contribute!!! LOL!!

Please keep us all updated as to how she's doing....Good luck!!!

Just a thought:
If I place a post/question on here on this forum, I like to read all of your guys responses and it is "TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT", but I respect everyones opinions.
If I cannot take it, I should not post. Just picking out the raisins or picking out what I would like to hear does not really help.
Hope this is not too harsh, all the best for the poor hen.

I do not think picking and choosing what one wants to hear is even an issue here. Each member has the right to post for assistance and in getting assistance, relaying all the facts, as best you can, is the way to get good advice.

Also, asking that the concern for the hen be the priority and not the stupid dog or the issue of the dog's actions, is a valid and reasonable request. The OP requested help for the hen and asked that it not be a dog issue...I think that is the least the responders can do. If the OP does not make that request then dog subject away.

Just my 2 cents worth.

How is Sadie?

But I do have a choice I chose life for the dog. After the dog attacked my hen I had to literally fight my old man and get a gun away from him because he was going to shoot the dog
right there on the spot. I couldn't see doing this in a spur of a moment decission when it hadn't been five minutes sonce my hen was injured. Like I said this is tearing me up inside and him killing the dog would of added to my grief.
