I know you don't want dog comments, but with all due respect and compassion I have to say that your problem dog is at the root of this horrible incident. I know that you're in a very unpleasant position here and it must have been very traumatic for you. Still, I think it's important to recognize the causative facts, and the fact is that your dog is uneducated and uncontrollable, which isn't a fun state of affairs for anyone concerned, including the dog.
A well trained dog is a free dog. A well trained dog is an *educated* dog that can be relied upon to exercise good judgement and behave appropriately. A well trained dog can truly participate in the life of the family, and will accept responsibility for other animals belonging to the family.
But a dog that has to be penned, that is not trained beyond the level of distraction, that cannot be controlled either from a distance or even from close up, that dog is not a fun dog to own and I sure wouldn't want one living next door to me.
There are a lot of nice, sensible, civilized dogs out there looking for homes and getting euthanized every day. I had an unreliable dog once so I have some sympathy for your position. Boy, it's tiring when you have to be aware of where the dog is and what it is doing at all times, and eventually it makes for some difficult decisions. But I now have a dog who is sweet, loving, and very responsible. She is a joy to me instead of a problem.
