I misspoke in my post, the food I'm using is dehydrated, rather than freeze dried. Still have to add water to reconstitute, doesn't take long.
The price has gone up substantially the last couple of years.
They sent out communications to customers indicating that they had held pricing for an entire year after Covid hit, but finally had no choice due to inflation and supply chain issues. Anyway, for the curious, I'm currently paying about $105.00 for a 10 lb box of grain free chicken recipe for my dogs, that makes 40 lbs of food once rehydrated. I go through just under 2 boxes a month because I supplement with fresh meat also. They have other formulas, some contain grain, some not, beef, fish, turkey, prices vary depending on the protein source, chicken being the lowest currently. A growing puppy is going to eat more, my Pyr was voracious while growing. Once they are full grown it's not quite so bad. The grain free chicken for my cats is about $55.00 for a 4 lb box, which makes 16 lbs rehydrated. I think I go through just over a box a month, the cats are also supplemented with fish and meat. No idea what my total budget is for the dehydrated plus the meat and fish comes to every month, I kinda don't want to know. As long as we are in the black every month I will continue. I do shop sales for meat, put it in the freezer, and the less wonderful cuts of things are fine for them, they don't care, it's meat.
I currently get the dehydrated either direct from the company, or from Chewy.
However, just received a newsletter that Chewy may be facing anti trust violations, so no idea what will happen if that's true and it happens. Apparently there are board members that sit on Chewy's and on Petsmart boards at the same time, and that's a no-no. So we shall see.
Also saw a financial write up that Petco is looking like a bankruptsy risk. If issues happen I will be only ordering straight from the company again, my nearest possible local source is over 60 miles away, and often out of stock.
So for many of us, it's the price, and it's the availability and ability to get it. I was trying a food a few years ago and I could only get it shipped out of Nevada. Very frustrating and inconvenient, especially if you have pets that have specific medical or health issues that very much dictate what you can and can't feed them.
