Dog training thread

The send away would an easy thing to train, but if you actually want them to do it with that state of mind that would be much harder. For example, a targeted bark is easy to train, but it doesn’t mean the dog perceives what it’s barking at as a threat. Do you want to dog to simply stand in between or actually protect your children? Those are very different. But any LGD is gonna look terrifying so the first might be all you need.

I'm dealing with tweakers so I'm thinking a big intimidating dog taking commands and standing between danger and the kids, my wife, or me will be enough of a deterant to make them think twice. He sleeps between the kids and there door already, I think it's in him(anatolian cross).

This dog isn't my only security measure, im just trying to build a full plan. I'm always armed. Fences. Gates on both driveways. Other lgd will 1000% keep strangers from the back side of my property(akbash x anatolian x Pyrenees). Basset hound warns me way ahead of time when people are approaching.
Unfortunately my 4th dog, a Pitbull, is worthless lol So much for "dangerous monster" lol. Unless youre allergic to dog nipples you are safe around her

I'm considering a Rottweiler when one of these dogs pass.

I’d suggest teaching a targeted bark. This is a way for the dog to understand where you want his attention and is a huge deterrent. For targeted barks you just teach them to bark first, then transfer that to toys. They need to be able to “turn on” at a toy easily (and turning off is good too). Then you can apply this concept to various objects. The dog just needs to understand to bark at what you indicate at. Then start doing this with people. You’ll just need some friends that would be willing to be barked at this does not teach the dog that what they are barking at is a threat, they are simply barking at what you tell them to.

If a dog is highly prey driven usually they naturally bark at toys so you might could just skip the first part and go straight to toys. Though most LGDs aren’t.

My boy has no prey drive lol he charges strange animals and barks but stops once they are gone and then just barks like a madman. He barks at strangers when I'm not around. I just need him to learn it on command. Definitely something to look into. Just 2 days ago I had 2 trucks with 3 men and 2 ladies try starting stuff with me outside my front gate. I big barker would have helped I bet.

He was raised around small children, chickens, ducks, cats, goats, and pigs. I'm his person. Recently I've had my 4yr old practicing commands with him and they have been doing very well. Hopefully he starts to follow her like he follows me

He’s gorgeous does he play with toys at all? Teaching dogs to bark on command can be very challenging if the dog isn’t inclined to do it. Mines the opposite, he usually only barks when I’m home, and I used that to teach him. Anytime he was barking I’d say “speak” and praise him verbally. It didn’t take him long to associate the command with barking. @Pampered chicken girl has a LGD and we had talked about her teaching hers to bark on command. I don’t know if she ever did it though. If she did, she might have some pointers on helping a LGD to bark.

Tyvm. He(Lobo) doesn't really play with toys. He wrestles the other dogs when he plays or passes time chewing bones. When he's play fighting he barks like crazyyyyyy. He's a smart boy, I think we can figure this out with a little time

Teaching lgd to bark at objects or people is actually a little harder then I originally thought. They bark at things they perceive as a threat normally but, at least in my case, they are so focused on what they are barking at that there is literally no attention on you to shape the behavior. Absolutely nothing will distract my dog off what she's barking at and her attention is not on me at all, its on the "threat". And since they are not prey driven, teaching off toys is difficult. I'm sure it's possible to shape the behavior onto a command but it definitely seems like itd be difficult. I haven't gotta around to it.
