The only time I've used "negative reinforcement" was when my dog started to guard food. I will not put up with that. Of course, I never hurt her, but I would use my intimidating voice and scruff if necessary (like when she was choking on a bully stick
).
All other training we did was clicker based with positive reinforcement. She was very food motivated, so this worked well. I could even use kibble and give her meals as training sessions. We paired hand signals with verbal commands. Super smart girl... I miss her so much. RIP Dory.
