Dog training methods

My family taught our dog to do his business in the woods or tall grass, away from the lawn. He does this on his own now, even in unfamiliar places.

When he was a puppy we carried him to the wood line whenever he needed to go, and rewarded him when he did his business. We got him in winter, so we were able to use a plowed path to direct him to the woods. At first we had to walk him to the wood line ourselves, but eventually he learned to take himself there. It was so worth it- we never pick up dog poop from the lawn!

Hi everyone!

Last Halloween we brought home Bella, who is our 6 month old Australian Shepherd and she has been nothing short of amazing. She listens very well, is always looking to please and is always giving us a good laugh.

I'm curious how you've all trained your furry friends, especially those with 'smarter' doggies. We recently worked with a trainer who is very well respected and we've seen amazing results. His approach is more about 'respect' and 'pack leadership' and not so much about treats and pampering.

His method has worked out very well but I'd love to learn more about different techniques used by everyone on here as well as any tricks and how you went about teaching those tricks!

That's cool!
For my dog, I've used her daily meals as food rewards. I like using food and would rather use her kibble for training instead of just feeding her in a bowl, but I don't bribe her and she listens without food. I also use leash pressure and release. I will not hesitate to correct my dog gently.

Do you mind if I ask which trainer?

Hi, I successfully taught basic obedience for about 20 years in Farmington NM and I never used treats. Nor did I use punishment. If you're interested in learning some of my all-natural techniques of communicating with your dog, please DM me.

This is a great method. In my opinion dogs should learn they earn their food. My dog free feeds right now for a few reasons but as soon as I can I plan on going back to this method, where the only food he gets comes from my hands during training.

As a puppy i taught with treats and or kibble. As well as praise rewards(play, pet, or just yes good) both pups listen but i also train almost daily. Just 5 to 10 minute trainings.
I can trust Tucker off leash without a e collar as long as no dogs are around (he is reactive) he will recall off of a rabbit. They are e collar trained but honestly i havent used them in over 6 months.
With Tuckers reactivity i train a lot. Simple walks that don't have dogs then walks that have on leash dogs that are under control.

For smart dogs, Tucker could run and run. At one point i was exercising him for 3 hours a day. Now we do one 45 minute walk(split into half structured and half not) or a offleash run at the park, he gets his meals in enrichment, as well as one enrichment toy daily. Then we do one training session. I like to get all his tricks in and at the end work on a new or newer trick i want him to learn.
