Morning update: She got sick once during the night
Got up took her out, she went potty and came back in. We are having TStorms so she really wasn't interested in taking her morning walk. Brought her back in and gave her some ice cubes and she licked on those pretty good. If she makes it to noon with no vomiting then I'll fix her some rice. She's got these big brown eyes and she just looks at you and says "I don't feel good" and you just melt.
Do you think she could have gotten into something poisonous? If she continues to vomit and have diarrhea, she will get dehydrated quickly. You can give her some pedialyte (the non-flavored kind) instead of water.
when my lab got the exploding squirts real bad my vet told me to boil hamburger drain and mix with cooked rice-I fed it to him for 1 cup 3x a day for 3 days and he was much better and had energy-he puked foamy stuff prior and it scared me to death-he had had all his shots and was very healthy all his life so this really scared me-poor baby puppy Im sorry-hope he gets better..
Hope she's feeling better soon. Glad to hear that you took her to the vet. My vet always recommends holding food for 24 hours, then doing a white rice and boiled skinless chicken breast.
The vet is not concerned in the least about any consumption of fluids at this point because she is not dehydrated and gums are pink and color is good. She said she could go 3 days without fluids and be fine. She has kept her ice cubes down. The reason for ice cubes is so she doesn't slurp large amounts of water and make herself vomit. We will continue on the ice cubes once an hour as long as she keeps the fluid down. Plain rice will be started next because it is the easiest thing to digest and then I'll add some live culture yogurt.
Dogs have a natural vomiting mechanism and once they have gotten ahold of something and their body says get rid of it then they do what they have to do to vomit and sometimes the body doesn't know when enough is enough.
As far as getting into something poisonous, anything is possible of course though she does not run freely and is never alone except when she is in bed with her human and he is sleeping
My DH did spray the cows and the yard with Permethrin-10 for flies and mosquitos. This spray is labled for cows, goats, poultry, dogs and cats so the vet did not think that would have harmed her unless she consumed it undiluted which there's no way that could of happened. None of our other 3 dogs or cats are ill.
Thank you all for the well wishes. It just broke my heart last night when I had to tell my 16 yr. old son that it was possible that she had Parvo and the consequences of the virus. I wanted him prepared for the worse and he cried like my little boy would have 10 yrs. ago. He will be in here reading as soon as he gets up from bed. It's been a long night for him.
My dogs became ill recently from something similar (one first, then a few days later, the other). I really think it was something viral I carried back from a dog show as the diarrhea had a 'smell' that reminded me of parvo. We were concerned, even though both our dogs are older and vaccinated. Both recovered after a few days with home treatment.
You can give dogs 1/2 an immodium for general diarrhea.
