she wasnt in the road when they had slowed down she APPROACHED THE VEHICLE AFTER THEY HAD SLOWED TO A CRAWL in front of the house. To me yeah theres a difference if she had ran out in front of them i would accept the responsibility but to me maybe they hadnt realized they gave her the cue to approach. Here its a law if you hit an animal you are supposed to stop and inform.

I have to agree with aubreymarie. I'm not being a jerk either. I LOVE my dogs, but they are in my fenced yard and I have worked hard to keep them there. When dogs are loose it is the owner's responsibility. You know people fly down your road, you have to be thankful it wasn't worse. I lost two dogs to cars when I was a kid and my parents didn't make sure the dogs stayed in the yard. I had a blue healer that would not stay home for anything, even after a $700 vet bill to amputate her back leg after it was shattered by a car. I in no way blamed the driver who didn't stop either.

And I am, really really glad that your dog and kids are okay!

Why would you let your dog go up to a strange car in the road and why would the cue for the dog to approach be an arm
Sticking out of a window?

I'm just confused

How on earth could they know that that was a cue?

Sounds like a very dangerous thing to teach a dog, anyway.

If the car was going at a crawl, then how did the dog get hit? Did it run in front of the car and then the car sped up? If the dog was running toward the person who gave it the signal to run to him then how did the dog end up in front of the car? I'm really confused and still don't see how it's the drivers fault. And why would he need to notify you if you saw it happen?

Sorry your dog was hit. However, you mght want to try to put in on a leash or behind a fence. The driver might have tapped on the side of the car to try and scare the dog away from the road. I might have done that and also blew my horn.

going to look on the bright side of things we were able to get her to the vet in a timely manner and were able to pay her vet bill. we do let her run loose she does stay on the property and she will let no strange animal anywhere on the property and alerts us if something isnt right. I dont think shes going to go near the road again or a strange car. we did give her the cue its ok to approach our vehicle by putting our arm out so she learned to stay away from the tires so what was maybe bad planning on my part I wanted her to get the idea from the start unless we gave her the cue to approach so she respected and kept her distance. this did work well up until now.

pips&peeps :

What would they be apologizing for? The dog was not in it's yard.

I know sometimes people won't stop because frequently the pet owner freaks out.

Too bad it happened, but not the driver's fault.

I agree...
If i hit someones dog , i would feel like total crap and be bawling...
BUT... i would also be VERY mad at the dog owner for LETTING their dog run loose...
I would actually be LIVID. It might not end well...
