yes you read that right I screamed at it. It dropped the bird them I called it to me and the dummy came. Dog went to its owner with a final warning. I won't let it happen again. I picked up my bird. Cleaned off wound. Applied triple antibiotic ointment to the area. Lots of lost feathers and a fingertip sized chunk missing next to tail. And skin removed around and below vent. It's isolated on extras bathroom with water in a box. It's just standing or sitting there. Not moving won't do anything. Should I keep it clean and as comfortable as possible? Restrict feed? Put it down and eat it.... I don't waste anything FYI. What?

I’m sure the bird is in shock. Keep it warm and give it food and water. Will probably be right as rain tomorrow. My dog had my rooster in its mouth. Dropped it when I yelled at him and I went over andpivked the bird up by the head and dropped out over the fence. By the time I got outside to dispose of the dead bird he was back by the designated chicken yard. I couldn’t believe it survived!

Birds are usually in shock for a bit of time after being attacked. She may have been squeezed or suffered internal injuries. Time will tell, so keep her in a quiet, dim room. Have food and water available for when she becomes more alert. Use a disinfectant such as chlorhexidene, betadine, or Vetericyn to initially clean wounds, then use saline and apply plain antibiotic ointment such as plain Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment twice a day. Look for any hidden puncture wounds. By tomorrow, I would be offering fluids upmto the ebak with a small cup, and some cooked egg, and chicken feed. If your yard is not fenced in, I would keep chickens in the run until the dog is not out.

No run. My birds range all day. I told the owner of I see the dog near my property is not coming home and she said she understands. Other than a hawk I've had no predator problems. My dog will chase the birds just to rial them up but doesn't hurt them intentionally. And she runs every other animal off our land. Funny thing she's a bird dog. Thanks for the advice... Also the dog owner offered to reimburse me for the cost of 2 POL pullets. Thought that was nice of her.

This has happened to me before too! Years ago I had a dog tear up an older pullet chick (after killing several other of my birds). I caught the dog in the act, there was damage to the underside of her and the vent area. I nursed her back to health, she lived in the house for weeks, and she did recover. Unfortunately, she only laid very, very few eggs and I think the dog attack had a lot to do with that.

With all that said, if it were to happen to me again, I would cull rather than put a lot of time and effort into a bird who will never be a productive flock member.

I'm relatively new to the chicken game so I'm letting this be a learning experience. If it was a meat bird I would of culled it already and feed it to route my dog depending on the size.
