Dog won't stay off couch

Maybe duct tape him to a ceiling fan blade while its turned on? We do that sometimes. Or duct tape him into a shoe box. Duct tape is a GREAT invention.

I would put him in a kennel when you gone to work. And then do the spray bottle when your at home.

Ours lives on the couch, OUR first mistake...letting him up there to start with. He did like getting into the garbage and thats what we had to do to break him of that.

Ever noticed how dog hair in the food makes it better and people hair in your food makes you gag?

The camera inside is temporary and only for him. Now the ones on the outside are a different story. I can monitor my property from my iPhone.

I don't mind the fur, it's the dog smell that bothers me. I buy a new cheap comforter once a month for my bed. He's worth it.

Is it me or are you totally contradicting yourself????

You want Jake to learn to stay off the couch but yet he can sleep on your bed and you buy new comforters for him b/c the old ones smell? Am I missing something here? You have to be consistent in your rules. If you don't want him on the couch then you need to make that across the board. No couch no bed. Once they have been allowed to do something it is hard to break them of it. Since he is so comfortable with your bed then maybe if you just barricade the couch for awhile and once he realizes he can no longer go on there b/c of foil, baby gate, flipped cushions, carpet runner (I personally used this idea and it worked well) etc he'll go where he 'is' allowed.
I wouldn't go for the 'leather' couch just yet. My friend bought a gorgeous leather couch for $1500. Her one dog that used to love just lying on her old couch, decided to use her new couch for a chew toy. LOL

We have neighbors who own three (3)!! full grown labs and they have a leather couch. When we got our new couch, a few years ago, I was afraid to get leather. Neighbors got their couch after ours. I would love to have a leather couch. Yes, theirs is a real nice leather couch. Now their dogs don't chew on things so if your dog does chew>>>>>>>>>>>

Well, PurpleChicken has already shown us pics of him post-shower with soaked rooster before. Dog's turn now. Poor Jake. He'll be scarred for life.

Exactly what I'm trying to say!

I only allow my dog on the bed once I SAY he can get up there, and only if I'm up there first. Since I 'own' the furniture (as the 'alpha' I own ALL of the comfy spots), I decide to give him permission or not to use it.

I may sound like a nazi control freak, but in some small sense, you have to be. Some dogs just don't respond to anything but hard rules. Thankfully my dog's pretty submissive anyway.

You have to understand how wolves or large packs of dogs work too though. If the leader doesn't want someone to eat before they do, they attack them and roll them onto their back until they submit to their will. Obviously in human society this isn't how it works, and being humans we assign dogs feelings (which I'm not saying they don't have, just not exactly like humans' emotions) and motives, even if these could be farther from the truth. Like for example, your dog jumps all over you as soon as you walk in the door. Most people would be like "AWW He loves me!" (or hate the dog for this and give them up because it was their own fault for not training them in the first place as a puppy), where the dog's thinking is more like "I love you, but I own you too. You pet ME and give ME attention when you come home (the place I was dominant over all day while you were gone), so I MUST own you!" If you notice how wolf puppies (or domestic puppies for that matter) constantly lick their mother and the other high-ranking wolves (only the alpha male and female are allowed to breed) you would understand that humans kissing up to their dogs for being gone all day is like a puppy(the human petting and loving their dog, even though he's jumping) trying to gain approval from his parents(the dog jumping on you, claiming you).

Like if a six pound chihuahua was possessive of it's owner while sitting on their lap, some people would say "Aw, look how he's protecting me! He's so cute!," yet if an eighty pound doberman were to growl and snap at people if it was near it's owner, it would be deemed unacceptable and vicious. How many of you don't like small dogs ('ankle biters') because of this exact type of situation?

I don't want to seem like I know 'everything about dogs' as that could be farther from the truth, but all I do all day is read and watch dog training shows on tv, because I'm very interested in the way a dog thinks, acts and behaves. ESPECIALLY around other dogs, since I don't have another, and would love to have a whole pack running around.

Just maybe look into the dominance thing, and how pack hierarchy works with wolves to better understand what's going through Jake's mind.

It may be just my opinion (please don't bite me!), but any dog that feels it can dominate humans could be a potential risk in the future. Especially if they feel they can dominate in a more aggressive way.

Pit bulls are naturally more assertive than other dogs are (like maybe a shi tzu or cocker spaniel) but this can be channeled into a really good working relationship with ease, just by using a lot of patience and training.

Like how my dog protects the chickens/ducks/turkeys, instead of chases them, because I 'own' the chickens (and others), and won't allow him to be bad around them. It starts when they're chicks, like if he gets overly excited around them I tell him that isn't allowed.

I hope I helped, but I wouldn't be surprised if you hated me now, for one reason or another.

Sorry in advance.

For PC to take a picture of him with a wet Jake he would have to aim the camera lower............and then we would ALL be scarred for life.
