I'm glad they found the dog in the middle of one of his "acts", Glad your hen i ok too! My dogs have never layed a paw on my chickens but my mom had gotten a puppy and i caught it holding my duck down just knawing off his wing like it was nothing, looked like africa in my frontyard! Well no one here cared he hurt my duck, anyway my mom has a new pit puppy now and she's awesome with the birds thank god!

I'm sure this doesn't need to be said, but chickenwire is only good for keeping chickens IN, any predator can and will go through it. Have you considered a better fence?
I am sorry your girl got injured- I've had the same problem, but lost the birds and it was my own dog that did it. It was a big wake up call for me. I don't want to sound rude, but in my opinion, if we are going to keep any animal, be it dogs or chickens or anything else, it is our responsibility to insure their safety and well-being. There will always be dogs running loose, hawks flying overhead, 'coons out an about and so on...it's just going to happen.

I've had dogs go through chainlink fencing, which I did not ever believe could happen. Now, I'm convinced that hog panel doubled with chainlink is the only secure fencing measures.

Again, sorry your girl got hurt- so many of us have been there and suffered losses to wandering dogs. I do agree that dogs should be kept in secure enclosures- another thing I had to learn the hard way with my own beloved boy.

Keep us posted on your girls recovery.

You don't sound rude at all. In fact I asked my DH iF that wouldnt be a problem,. One of the reasons aside from thinking it would detour stray dogs, is that it would keep our free ranging chickens from wandering of to far, and get into other peoples gardens. The neighbor with the dog has his garden planted right on the property line. SO trying to be good nieghbors we ran the wire acrossed. THe chicken wire was "supposed " to be a temopary fix any way. we have been working on putting up better fence all the way around the property. And that takes awhile to do.

Sorry this had to happen to you, your chicken and the dog it was naglect on the owners part that pisses me off. people just don't have respect. like my dog's my one had been shot in the chest as a puppy and is now terrified of guns and and thunder and my other dog who is a lab was neglected as a puppy though every one asumse oh she's a lab and goes to smother her scares her so that she hides behind me i've worked with her in dog training and have made amazing progress every one needs to love man's best friend and respect them.

I totally agree with you M.J . I do kind of feel sorry for the dog and even the owner. I hate to see bad things happen to people. Even when they deserve it. We have a court date set for the first part july. The dog has been put down. They found it to be to agressive. I guess it tried to eat anyone that came close to it. The vet had to amputat my hens wing. I guess their was enough nerve damage that the wing died and was literally rotting off. She seems to be doing well despite missing the wing. i hyave put her back in with the others, and she has gone back to acting like a chicken. I have to catch and make sure that it isnt getting infected. but I think it will be ok.

:(Poor dog if only better pet management. sorry to hear about your hens wing. hope she progresses well and is healty.

THanks again M.J. I do think that it was a terrible waste of a dog. Rotts are very intellegent, and are usaully easily trianable. I dont think as the breed being visious. But a dog the size of this one that as been ignored a huge chunk if its life. And permitted to do what ever it wants Made it very dangerous. I wish that all people that own dogs would look into the breed of dog they are getting. And then when they get the dog enroll in a dog onedience class. THen their wouldnt be as many that are running around at large. And the pounds would be euthanizing as many as they do. Most people go out and see a cute puppy and with out thought to what it will become or what is required for the breed they pack it home. THey play with it while its cute then when it out grows its cute puppy stage they ignore it , then when it distructive they either kill it or hall it into the pound. And more times than not the pound has to euthanize them because they get to many dogs and need to make room for the new comers.

My nieghbor came up to day. He wanted to give me a sob story about his dog that is now dead. He told me that his dog never would intentionally hurt the animals it had. And that it only was trying to play with them. And how he thought I wouldnt call the police since he offered to pay the vet bills. He told me that they had no right to put down the dog, because they tormented it until it tried to bit them. I told him I was sorry they had to put the dog too. And I wasnt the one who called the cops on him it was the vet. And I was sorry if he felt the dog wasnt out trying to do damage and was just playing, and if that was what it was doing I asked him what he thought it would do to something when it wasn't playing. I also asked him why he knowingly would let the dog go and roam where ever it wanted when he knew that it had been out damaging other peoples property, and killing and injurying other peoples animals. And he pretended he was totally stupid, and told me he didnt think she would ever cause a problem again after he punished it for the damage it had done. He told me how lonely he was now that his precious dog was gone. ( this part made me sick) and how he had to come up with the money to get another pup off the same breeder that he got this dog from. I told him when he did he better take better care of it and keep it in his yard or in his house so that it wouldnt do the same as his dog that he just lost.
