dogs and chicken poop

Well............I feel somewhat better that they will not DIE! The chickens and dogs will share the same paddock. But I pick up immediately after my dogs (if I am there) and if not later in the day. I never let the "lawnmower do it" like some of my neighbors!

When I first got the pups they would always eat the bunny poo...aka bunny caviar and they never got sick. I heard on the radio that dogs LOVE bunny poo is because rabbits only eat the tops of carrots or greens! So it is pure nutrition coming out of them! Smart rabbits.
So perhaps the same concept can be applied to chicken feed...especially if there is vegetables in the diet.
So OK...I feel better! Many thanks to all that replied. I truly appreciate it. And thanks for the laugh NZ Pouter!

One of our dogs got sick once from eating chicken poop; she laid around for two days, had diarrhea, and was back to her usual self soon afterwards.

By the way, she did learn her lesson and doesn't eat chicken poop anymore.

Our dogs look forward to the time each day when the chickens are put up for the night. That means (to them) that it's time to go out and hunt for chicken poo in the yard. Neither dog has ever gotten sick from it and neither dog has parasites.
We have a rather sick cycle going on at our place too. The dogs eat the chicken poo, the cows eat the chicken poo (& dirty litter!) and the chickens scratch through the cow poo looking for tasty bits to eat.

In fact, the farmer that leases our pastures for his cows to graze makes a habit of allowing the litter from the commercial chicken houses to "season" then puts it out in huge bats for the cows to eat in the winter. The rest of the used litter goes on the pastures to help the grass to grow to be used as hay. It's a common practice around here.
It's the circle of life.

My dog thinks the chickens are walking snack dispensers! Whatever comes out, if he can get to it without me yelling at him, is fair game to eat!

He's pretty good about the eggs though, he will stand there looking at it until I tell him he can or cannot have it.
