Dogs can be so...

might be worth keeping a slip leash handy so you dont have to grab the collar, ive had my fingers pinched by a good leather collar and it hurts so i dont blame you for letting go...

My dog think's I do not get sufficient cardio, so he enjoys playing catch me if you can with me as often as possible...ugh, good thing my son is now 13 and he can handle him better w/o letting go.....

Glad he's back

I'm sorry, I'm sure I've misunderstood your words as tone cannot be heard over the Internet, but did you just call me stupid?

Oh gosh, you were throwing around the word *stupid* and just now realized who might be *stupid* --- and that offends you? I don't think you are dumb, slow, or stupid.
Your dog loves you anyway

make sure that you check with your local shelter to find out their procedure on scanning for chips. Our local shelters DON'T scan unless you have called to report your dog missing and specifically ask them to scan. Even then, there is a good chance they won't scan him if they don't think he "matches the description" Or another common problem is one person assuming that another worker scanned and no one did.

vets, the same. Only if they know that a chipped dog of a certain description is missing do they scan. Even that won't help if someone finds your dog and decides to keep him. The vet won't be looking for an "owned" dog - and yes people will lie. A co-worker got lucky after her yorkie was stolen from her house (dog had severe medical issues with diabetes) and the person who had the dog happened to bring it to the vet that my co-worker used. Again, the dog was chipped, but if it hadn't been a vet tech who knew the dog personally, no one would have checked for a chip.

Wow! In our state, it's a law that animal shelters MUST scan dogs and cats they pick up for microchips. I wonder why other states do not require that? It seems like a lot of lost pets could be reunited with their owners if scanning was required.

Microchipping helps. The first thing I teach my dog is re-call.

Start by calling in the house, when he comes make a big deal and give him a treat and walk away. Make it a fun game for him. Do this a few times til he get's it perfect, then do it outside, in a fenced yard. He will soon learn, when he calls me I get a treat, and will go about my business. Don't ever catch him when he comes because he will say "Im not coming because you will catch me and my fun will be over". When you have another moment like this call your dog, and make sure you use the SAME tone, not mad, worried, or frustrated because he will know something is up right away. Then he won't see it coming, call him and when you act like you treat him grab his collar.
