Dogs can be so...

Great advice, but I would add that you want to grab the dog's collar before giving the treat. You don't want the dog to think "come here" means come up to you, then dart away to do as he pleases. Good luck, I have a runner as well, and it is so frustrating!

That's another issue I'll have to reverse. He was completely trained on recall. While I was in AR my Dad had to care for my larger animals as large dogs were not allowed in the apartment complexes. He'd let him out ALL day without supervision. I received a phone call from two counties away that he was there. Apparently when Marley didn't come back, Dad left and Marley made trips around for food and treats.

Regarding the "stupid" stuff. I was angry. Especially because he knew we were calling him. Hence the stupidness that dogs can show..

All dog owners have a bad time of it every now and then.

Our Corgi ran away (we rescued him 2 years ago as my Aunt found him wandering the highway near her house and after ads placed, no one claimed him). Anyway, he was found two ridges over to the East, in a HavAHeart racoon trap! He sat there for 36 hours (guess since that is when he disappeared) in the rain in that little trap. Glad the guy who checked his traps kindly called us instead of disposing of him, he was fine. Dogs. . . .
