Dogs & chickens

There are cows in the pastures all around us, and I'm grateful Gracie is such a clean girl, she never rolls in anything nasty. She always takes care of her personal business away from the house, too. She is such a lady. The little sneak, though, with this secret vice!

Our new dog rolled in chicken poop 2 days after we brought her home. She got a bath immediately and hasn't rolled in it since. She picked up a piece of chicken poo in her mouth once and immediately spit it out. Hasn't eaten chicken poo since. It sometimes just depends on the dog, i.e., whether it likes to eat poop or not. Ours doesnt but we got lucky. Sometimes it's diet related and sometimes they just like to eat it. You could try smearing some on her nose and leaving it there so she eventually doesn't like the smell. You have to train them that it's nothing new and unexciting so they dislike it. Im sure theres a book somewhere about it

There are exceptions, Dogs eating Wild Mushrooms or Rat Poison. But, instinctively, animals know Bitter or Sour are to be avoided. Poop must not fall into either of these categories. One of my Beagles, won't eat anything offered unless he sees a human eat it first. Even if we change Dog Kibble, I have to, at least, look like I am eating some before he will eat it. His brother Beagles and our 6 month old Pit/Boxer are less picky...JJ

All three of my girls eat chicken poop. I don't get too worried about it, mostly because I've seen worse. My St. Bernard used to chug pig poop before I could yell at her. Then one day she came in the house and promptly threw up the biggest pile of pig poo...on my carpet. If you've been around pigs, you know the smell.:sick:he

Agreed. You can also teach an eat command. They use this to train guard dogs so only the owner can feed them. My dog is trained to bark how many scoops of food she gets. Then she is told to "go to her room" to eat. She goes but she watchs to make sure you're bringing the bowl. We did this because she will charge our cat if the cat goes anywhere near her bowl. The two of them arent quite friends yet

Ugh gross! Now it smells like poo AND vomit!:sick

My three sit quietly around me and then the Mom, while we eat. They wait for forkfulls of Their Share and the end. Bev puts extra on the plates just for the boys. They are not Food aggressive at all but not quite as responsive as those Pitbulls. One funny yet annoying trait...My younger Beagle, does not trust that we have given the last of the food. He will sneak around and try to get to the Table to verify all food is gone. He seems to think we Stashed something away for later. Even getting reprimanded, he just comes at the table from a different angle. We love him but he can be a stubborn PITA!...JJ
