dogs killed my chickens

glue traps for any mammal/reptile catching/annoying are not good. you make smaller critters suffer(they cost money also) this dog sounds like trouble and needs to be gone NOW.

Well 3 more chickens gone and one dead dog. I thought i would feel bad but nothing. I just feel bad for the owners childeren. And my 5 dead chickens. thanks for all ur info. I did call the local police and they said shoot the dog. Take pics of the dog in the act if possible. Didnt have time to take pics woulda be more dead chicks. Guess my problem is over for the time bieng. I bet the a.... next door is gonna buy 5 or 6 dogs now.

Our chickens range pretty far from the homestead and as such, I know that when they leave the relative safety of our place that they become part of the food chain.
So far, so good but I know eventually we will lose a few.
I would shoot any animal that is killing my stock but if its a dog, I would try my best to alleviate the problem some other way first.
I think you did try.
Sorry for the pooch but once a dog gets a taste of calf or chicken, its over.

Well, I sure hope Rover is buried deep in an unmarked grave. Don't say a word about what happened to him.

Agreed! The owner will probably figure it was you, but don't advertise it. Also if you have any problems with him call and report it right away, even if it's just verbal. Always good to have a paper trail if things get worse later.

Sorry you had to go there and for your chickens and the dog with the idiot owner. It's mind-boggling how irresponsible some people can be. You did the only thing you could under the circumstances.

Agreed. There's a time and place when verbal or non-lethal ways can work, but not when a dog is tearing apart your property or livestock.

Dig a hole and keep silent, let the owner wonder. There was a case of someone who notified the dog owner, and got sued for causing distress for the family. It got thrown out, but time consuming and aggrivating in the mean time.

I would never tell the owner because im sure the evil old timer would want some payback. I really didnt have much of a choice. I told the police i would try to trap him and take him to a shelter but he was a little to aggresive for me to be fooling with. the officer said they would kill him anyhow so what was the use of taken the chance on getting bit. I feel sure i did the right thing.

First-- welcome.

Sorry you had to shoot the dog, I believe you were justified. Even before you notified the owner of the problem.
Over the years I have had to do away with a few, still feel bad about it, but you have to protect what is yours. We now have a very efficient animal control dept in the parish. I have used their services a few times in the recent years.
Two weeks ago I sent a yellow lab running home with a note on his collar. Haven't seen him since.
Another subject that may need to be adressed here is, how are your chickens housed? Securely? If that dog got'em it's only a matter of time before another dog or some other eater of chickens show up. True, the owner of the dog should have been more responsible and by rights your animals should be safe on their own ground. But that ain't the way it is, everything, thinks chickens taste good. It is only an animals nature to kill and eat, be it a coon or a dog. You as the chickens owner need to be responsible enough to provide secure housing. Remember it ain't no fun to raise a hen for 5 months and just when she is ready to lay, something kills her.

Ya, you did the right thing. I have had to shoot dogs also. Never felt bad, just kept thinking of the poor chickens they killed.

Wouldn't tell anyone about it. Just let them wonder. At least no more of your chicks will be killed by that dog.
