Dogs Protecting Chickens

One of the most precious pics I have taken. My senior pup(she will be 14) and Sunny. This dog has been around every kind of animal possible.

Fingers crossed one day our border collie pup will not harm the chickens. I don't expect him to bond with them like a LGD would, but all I ask is he not hurt them! Even if he wants to round them up and keep them in the yard! So far he thinks they taste good if one commits suicide and wanders into his area of the yard :he

I have an elderly German Shepherd, Elderly Beagle, and adult Xolo and Pomeranian. All four are fine with my four free range hens. I wouldn't say they protect the flock inasmuch as just guard our back yard. When our rooster was alive he'd get into it with all four dogs. The beagle and rooster would be rolling across the lawn tangled up. The beagle thought the rooster was playing, he was not.

Now that it is just the four hens peace reigns in the urban microfarm.

I definitely can't say golden retrievers are protective chickens since one of mine as grabbed one and try to kill it before, but my Pyrenees was protective of the chickens and I have seen a lot of other ones that are too.

I have 2 goldens. Completely different personalities. One would try to kill a chicken and the older one(which I would love to clone) is fine with them and has even alerted me to raccoons in the trees. He was barking and dancing and so very proud of himself for finding the coons.

I have a rottweiler. I wasn't sure if he would get along with our chickens. In the beginning he would try to chase our oldest girl. But when I brought out our chicks he laid down and relaxed with them.

Once they got bigger he became very protective. Even to the ducks. They all hang out together and find cool spots to lay.
In this pic the dog, chickens, and ducks are all laying under our old truck. If you look at the dog's butt you can see one of the ducks tails.

This wasn't planned we just got lucky with our rottweiler. He is a very sweet and loving dog. And he always scares off predators, especially hawks. He doesn't like any birds that fly in our yard.

My Terrier/Boxer mix "Phelps" is very protective over my flock. He is 10 now so he isn't as spry as he once was, but he still does his best to keep watch over "his" girls. Coyotes have tried to catch some of our girls on several occasions, but Phelps has fought them off every time. He has protected the chickens from our neighbors chicken-killing dog, and another neighbors dog. Once a skunk was foraging where our flock was, and Phelps carefully led the skunk away from the flock (he is very smart as well :p).
Once our friend brought her tiny little Dachshund over, and she was playfully chasing the chickens; Phelps was standing between her and the flock in an instant, the entire time they were there he never left the chickens. He is very loyal :)

My golden thinks the chickens are squeaky toys. I have to keep an eye on him very closely because I am sure he would love to give them a little squeeze. My head chicken, a Buff Orpington, gave him a good peck on his nose today and he thought it was great fun. My rescue mutt, who we think is retriever shepherd mix, would like to eat them as well. I never leave them alone together. I will say that any predator that comes near gets chased off, no matter what time of day.
