Dogs running lose

Free roaming dogs get a one way ticket to the dog pound when I find them. I have had too many get into my rabbits and kill them because their owners refuse to keep them confined. I feel your pain. I have a neighbor that does that with her dogs too. The first thing they run for is the rabbit barn. Then she tried to put the blame on me for having rabbits, because her dogs run off to my barn when they get lose. Needless to say a city cop was standing right there when she said it. And he put the word to her to keep her dogs confined or else. Second they did it they killed one. She got threatened to pay for the damage or face having a $100 fine of each dog.

I agree with checking your city laws. Most require the dogs have to be leashed, chained or kenneled at all times when they are outside.

Dogs should be kept on the property of their owners unless under control in a different way (leash, voice control, etc.). We live in the suburbs and roaming dogs are a constant problem in our neighborhood (strays and dogs that are allowed to roam by their owners). Not only can a dog cause havoc with my chickens if they get in my yard, but they also poop on my property forcing me to clean up after someone else's animal, but they harass my dogs through our gate. If I can catch roaming dogs, they go straight to the pound. There is one little chihuahua that is constantly roaming. The owners will put a sweater on it when it's cold, but they apparently can't be bothered to keep the dog on their own property.

ETA: Let me amend one of my statements. If I can catch a dog that I know has been roaming my neighborhood before, I will take it to the pound. If I have never seen it before and it has tags or some way for me to find the owner, I will try to.

I think all animals should remain on the owners property. As for dogs I under stand they get loose from time to time. If i see a dog once running loose...not an issue. Twice I will attempt to find the dogs owner and bring dog back and talk to owner. Three times police. if dog touches live stock skip 1-4 and shoot and report to local police.

My dog has gotten loose before, however this was before he was fully traind. Now he is traind and will listen to all commands.

Thanks guys.
I hope that with alot of talking they will listen.
Their dog started leading our dog out of the yard so now he has to be tied up.
P.S. has any of you used an electric invisable dog fence before?

I believe the owners should be responsible to have control of their animals. I know a guy who has a dog. Never puts the dog on lead. Why? Because the dog obeys the voice commands. Even if the dog sees another dog if he says stay his dog will stay.

Now, I have had my beagle escape on many an occasion. We have found the faster way to get him back is to hop in the car and drive around. As soon as he sees the truck he goes chasing up after us. His ears flapping in the wind and full scale run after the truck. We stop, open the door and he hops right in. I don't allow my dog to run loose, but there are times he has gotten loose.

Where we are now when I go to clean his outdoor kennel and run we let him out, but he is always in sight. He likes to run the lower pasture, so we let him run a bit and call him back. He never returns for my husband, but all I have to do is squat done and call him name and he comes running to me.

high drive dogs will simply run straight through an invisible fence, then be too afraid to come home once out...and of course it does nothing to protect your dog from dogs comming in.
a good fence is what ill reccomend to anyone (especially after seing a 4lb chihuahua simply run through an invisible fence lol)

if a dog gets out by accident thats one thing...
but a repeat offender..
if it attacks one of my dogs, my family, or when i have it, livestock, i would have no issue killing that dog...
if its not being harmfull however the first offence ill try to find the owner all other offences, striaght to the pound or call the police, let them pay the release fee a few times, theyll get the message.

No but I put up a real electric fence for livestock to keep the dogs out> they didn't seem to like it that much! I had to take it down when I moved my rabbits into the barn, because i couldn't get the darned thing to ground right. ;/

See mine was a repeat offender. We even had him on a tie out. Huge stake that we also got a friend for her 250 lb horse of a dog. Her dog never got it to budge. My little 25 lb beagle ripped it out of the ground and took with it sailing behind him.
This dog can jump 6 + ft in the air from a sit. Can you imagine if he got a running start. He jumped a 10 ft tall privacy fence. We have him in an outdoor kennel type run and had to afix chain link panels to the top so he could not escape. And at 25 lbs he is still under weight. The vet checked him for worms. None found. Only thing they can figure is he has a very high metabolism.
