Doing It Again...Eggs Went in Hova Today (Candling Report Page 3)

I candled the first batch of eggs, which are now entering Day Six and here's the verdict:

3 Barred Rock: 2 of the 3 are growing, both of those being Lexie's. The fertility test egg for my younger pullets seems clear, but I'll give it a couple more days. I keep hoping one of the other three BR girls' eggs will be fertile, but Hawkeye just isn't getting it done with anyone but his favorite girl, Lex. Good thing I'm keeping his son Gabriel around to take up the slack in the reproduction dept.

8 Blue Orpington: Five have definite growth, one appears clear and two, I just can't tell for certain. Again, I'll have to re-candle for those due to the shells being too dark to see much.

3 Blue Orp/Buff Brahma : One seems infertile, two are growing great. I love Caroline's eggs! They are so easy to candle!

1 Blue Orp/Lt. Brahma : Miranda, Miranda, what to say about Miranda? That egg is so dang porous, which I didnt notice when I first put it in the bator, that I cant see a dang thing. I don't see any veins, but I probably wouldn't through all the splotchiness. Usually, her eggs are not like that and if I'd known, I'd have waited and put another one in. This is a fertilty re-test anyway and I honestly expect it to be clear. I'll re-candle it in a couple of days just to be sure.

I thought I had an Ameraucana in with this group, but it turns out they are both in the second group, due three days after this one.

So, that's Candling Report #1. Not too bad. The Blue Orps and the Barred Rocks are the really important ones here. Since the second batch is just entering Day 3, it'll be a few more days till that candling session.

Candled the second group that are just now entering Day Five; I know, it's early, but it's a good thing I did and I'll explain later on.

4 Blue Orpingtons: Of the three that are Skye's, two are growing well and one is questionable, so I'll have to re-candle that one in a few days. The one that is Velvet's was actually one that I wasn't sure was hers. It looked a little like Miranda's, my Lt. Brahma, but it had a matte finish, like Velvet's eggs. Miranda's are usually shiny. So, with Miranda's shape and Velvet's finish on the egg, I really wasn't 100% positive who it belonged to and put it in the bator with a ? on it. That one seems clear, so I'm betting that it belongs to Miranda. Bummer. I think Velvet has quit laying again. She's such a diva!

2 Ameraucanas: Both are growing well, both Charlotte's.

11 Barred Rocks (10 are from helmstead's flock)

ALL eleven are growing, 10 from Kate's flock and 1 of Lexie's.

I said earlier that it's a good thing I candled early. When I took Lexie's humongous egg from the turner, it had liquid on the bottom, something I've never encountered. It didn't seem particularly slimy and didn't smell bad nor could I find a crack in the egg. I replaced the egg then went back about 15 minutes later and took it out. Again, wet on the bottom. It has a couple of tiny bumps on the bottom of the egg and the only thing I could figure was that one of them has a teensy, tiny hole, like a pin hole. DH melted some parrafin wax and dipped the bottom 1/4 of the egg into the wax to seal it up. Hopefully, that will fix it, but I'll pull it out before I go to bed to recheck it.

Oh, NO! I think my turner has quit on me! Dang it, that thing is only a year old, too. I may have to remove all of the eggs and hand turn if this turner doesn't start back up tonight. Never done that before and I hate that they'll cool down while I take out the turner and reorganize. Oh, gee. Nothing seems to be stuck and keeping it from turning.

And I say DADGUMMIT or DADBURNIT, just like ol' Hoss Cartwright used to say. I tapped on the motor and sort of messed with the trays, so maybe if it was stuck, it will start back, but now I'll be worried constantly, even if it's working again.

If the turner quit on you, this will help in a pinch if you dont have much water in it or have a sponge, tilt the incubator on its side by a thick book and switch it again later in the day on the other side. Worked for me in a pinch. Be sure the books are not too thick that the eggs will roll off the turner.

Wish you all the luck....I'm getting some bad luck here on my Blue Orp flock, since everyone is finishing up their molting and alas, I got more cockerals than gals in the lot! Jeez, it may be a little as half a doz eggs will be provided or chicks, which I think its better and go from there. So far I have only two Orp pullets and the rest of the six are cockerals....grrrrrrrrrr, drat the roo that produces sons! I have one cockeral that looks awesome and HUGE! He is going to be one purdy bird!

My camera no longer working, hubby dropped it a few times and it finally quit. Bummer!
