Doing It Again...Eggs Went in Hova Today (Candling Report Page 3)

Found the problem on the turner. Somehow, the little hook thing that connects the turner with the motor was bumped off. I dont think the eggs have been in that position the entire time as I seem to recall them facing the opposite way, too. On the other hand, I dont know exactly when it was disconnected from the motor arm. In any case, they are back in the turner now and it should be working just fine. Hopefully, that little bit of non-turning didn't hurt anything.
Sorry about your rooster luck, Robin. I have that same luck. Out of twelve Ameraucana chicks, it appears I have 8 cockerels and 4 pullets.

I recandled to be certain then tossed Miranda's (Lt Brahma-not surprised, but was hoping things had changed), one of the three of Caroline's which was missed on the fertility conveyor belt, and my BR, Mandy's, whose eggs have never been fertile anyway. Hawkeye is just not the Love Machine that some other roos are, LOL.

Im pretty sure that one each of Skye's and Velvet's (Blue Orps) are clear, but I need to wait a bit on those since they are harder to see upon candling due to the texture/color/swirlies in the shells themselves.

These were all from the first batch that are on Day 8 today.

Tossed two more eggs that weren't fertile. I believe one was actually Miranda's that I mistook for Velvet's one day. Apparently, Miranda's eggs are slightly different now and I'll have to be careful not to confuse the two.
Anyway, between the two batches, due three days apart, I'm down from 32 eggs to 24, not unexpected since a couple were fertility tests anyway.

I have left:
13 Barred Rocks, 3 of Lexie's and 10 from Kate's flock
7 Blue Orpingtons
2 Blue Orp/Buff Brahma crosses
2 Ameraucanas, both Charlotte's

Upon candling one of the Ameraucanas, I saw what appeared to be two embryos or either it was an embryo and a meat spot, not sure. That egg is no larger than her normal eggs so I seriously doubt this is a double yolker. Dont want to do that again! Ill have to watch that one and re-candle it in a few days.

How can you tell if an egg is fertile

After incubating a few days, you have to candle it/shine a bright light through the egg. I use a slide projector to see the veins spreading and the embryo inside.

at day 7 you should see some veins when you candle. If the egg is clear, its probably unfertilized.
