Hello, I am getting 4 Toulouse goslings in one month. I’m very excited about this but new to geese. Grew up and currently live on a farm but have only had chickens never waterfowl. Of course I am trying to learn everything about them and their care. I have found out a lot of information so far but can’t find anything on their interaction with wild geese. We live in the country and Canadian geese show up every spring/summer and live and raise young in the horse/cow field and use our pond.
Is there any precautions for domestic geese using the same pond as wild? We figured they would have supervised visits to the pond and field especially the first year but is there any diseases we need to be aware of? Their home yard is 1/2 acre fenced with garden, orchard, and lawn. They will have a bathing pond in the yard, so don’t need to go to the pond if it will endanger them. I want to keep them safe but would love for them to swim on the pond also.

I don't think disease transmission will be a concern if the pond is large enough that it does not become soiled with waste. Canadas are territorial and protective of their chicks but I would think you have enough space for both. I would be more wary this season, and less once the domestic geese are grown as by then they will outsize the wild geese. The two species can cross-breed, though this is unlikely unless your pond hosts a wild canada goose which does not have a mate.

Thank you Serin,
We normally have a pair and we believe an uncle that stay every year and raise a batch of goslings. They are pretty use to us coming and going in the field and pond. The gander will only honk for a while then go about his business. The pond has a pretty good water flow and doesn’t get too bad till late fall. I just didn’t know if there would be issues with parasites. Well try not to let our goslings mingle with theirs. Boundaries are good.

Jump right in and make yourself at home.

More goose people will see it over there.
