Hi all! So I just got a duck who is about 3 weeks old. At first he had a small bin with soft bedding wood shaving to collect the poop which worked really well considering the wood dried everything up. Now since he has gotten bigger, I bought him a play pen which I put on the floor in the house with puppy wee wee pads for when he goes to the bathroom. The puppy pads work well except we go through alot because ducks go to the bathroom non stop. Any other suggestions on bedding I can put in the playpen as a flooring that is easy to clean and not messy? Thank you!

What a cutie, is there anywhere you can use shaving in the bottom of the play pin? lay down the pee pads then shaving on top of that. Might work fine. and

The problem with that is that the play pen is pretty big with no bottom so that's alot of shaving and mess :/ any other suggestions?

I don't think I have ever seen a ply pen without a bottom. how about rubber mats, they use them in horse stalls I have seen them at TSC, then you could sit the play pen down on top of it add shavings or just take it out side at end of day and wash off with hose.

Can you take a picture so we can get a better understanding? is their only the one duck? ducks are flock animals and do truly benefit from the companionship of others.

@ 3wks the mess will only continue to worsen, i would look into a different form of brooder... it'll be a lot less work for you!

If you are talking about a play pen for dogs that is made out of wire then I also have one that I sometimes use. I just put old towels in the bottom and wash them when I have enough for a load.

That is a good idea, could be a puppy playpen but still with the duck heading into the really rapid growth stage it'll be a lot of mess to keep up with.

Yes the play pen is just a wire one for dogs. The mats sound like a good idea but I would have to clean it more than once a day because I don't want him sitting in his poop. This is the play pen. I got a play pen so he had more room to walk around

That is really nice, I saw some one else uses one of those I'll see if I can find her post about her duck. https://www.backyardchickens.com/g/a/6391711/what-else-should-i-put-in-my-duck-pen/ also another place you'll get answers https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/632070/show-off-your-house-ducks/90#post_11162600

Just an idea but you could maybe put a tarp on the bottom. And secure it to the sides for some depth and then just add shavings again or whatever you would want to use. It would keep the shavings from going anywhere and it would be easy cleanup.
