Hi all,
I have 9 quail of various ages. There's 1 male and female that are a year old, but the dominant roo is 3 years old as are his preferred hens. It appears that the young roo is not mating with any of the hens. And the old roo sticks with his old girls who are his favourites.
If I was to remove the old roo 😢 would the younger one step up and start mating? The young roo is quite small compared to most of the hens. Or is it more likely that if he is just not mating now that he won't at all even if he were the only male in the flock?
advice appreciated.

You gotta try. If you want fertilized eggs, you need to remove the dominant, steril roo.

But as I wrote in a previous post, the result is always unpredictable. When the dominant roo is gone, the whole flock may regroup and there may will be some fights.

we have a small quail who still mates with the hens who are bigger than him. His daddy lives in a different place and has a friend to keep him company. The small quail is the only guy there and he likes all his friends.
