My Dominiques are completely winning the egg race.

In the same coop, and the same age, they are winning hands down against my Hamburg ('every day layers' my $%#!) as well as my rose comb leghorns!

Newbie rooster questions.....now that I know Joe is a 'he'.... there are ten ladies. He is five months or so old. I have never seen any aggression from him towards me. Now he is running some of the girls away from food and I have noticed him grabbing a couple of hens by the feathers on their backs. Is this the beginning of mating? There are two older hens who run him away when he acts like this towards them......but the others are intimidated by him. But I never have seen him be really mean or hurtful to them. I thought he was going to share food??? Is this just a learning/adjustment time for him or is he headed in the wrong direction?

learning and adjustment time.

It can take them awhile to figure out how to be a good rooster. After a month of two things will calm down a great deal.

Since our cold weather started I am only getting eggs from one pullet - a buckeye/leghorn cross. Everyone else is on strike. The two dom pullets (6-7 month old) are not laying at all. Cant wait till spring! (ok I guess I am going to wait 6. long. months.) grr

You're lucky to be getting any eggs from anyone right now. Out of 3 hens I only had a little Silkie laying eggs and then the weather went sour - rain and early dark hours - and she immediately stopped. She even stopped being broody since it got cold. I was hoping my Ameraucana would start laying again like she did last year December but she isn't showing any signs of nesting either. Looks like a long wait until Spring for us.

I am a bit confused as to Dominiques laying during winter months. We're zone 3, and winter is forever, here. Heating their water is one thing, heating an entire coop for that many months would be pretty much out of the question. I could bring in a couple of eggers into a room off my garage that will have floor heat...
