Dominique Thread!

Ticks me off that I ended up with so many sweet, good looking boys out of my straight run this summer. I can't keep them all! :(

Hi there,

As I read through this thread, I noticed quite a bit of talk about the quality of dominique stock. I have 9 dom chicks that are just under 2 months old. Can someone tell me from the pics below if these guys seem to have good traits or not? Be honest. Thank you!

Will be honest. Unless growth is slow, bird has serious physical deformity, or is obviously inconsistent with the standard of perfection, latantly inconsistent you will not be able to make an assessment of such young birds. I do cull early those exhibiting slow growth and deformities that will prevent reaching eating size without lots of babying. The more particular culling does not occur until birds are approaching 8 months of age and for pullets well into lay. It is then that mature type will be displayed and you will have a handle on feathering.

From that you will be able to pick out good individuals. The real question you have about the group / stock you have must take into account the percentage of what you start with is quality and what percentage of their offspring are likely to be similarly categorized.

Slow growth? I mean they're only 1 month and 3 weeks old, what makes you think that? These guys are all either full or half brothers and sisters and I've seen their parents (I got them from a breeder). Do you notice any physical deformities or anything that is obviously wrong with them? Your response is a little vague and/or obscure to me.
