Dominique Thread!

Held Hobo for a little while before roost time, just put her in my lap and rubbed her wattles. She went to sleep like that, so i just balanced her on the roost and shut the door. :)

That is so sweet. Doms love -- no, DEMAND -- attention from their humans. It's no wonder they make a beloved pet as well as utility bird. Yes, chickens are food-driven but I have a couple of real cuddlers too w/o needing treats!

I love the small wattles on your birds...wattle size is something I fight with...

From years of reading the Dom thread I saw the wattle issue arise more than a few times but mainly they were talking about roo's. Has it been a noticeable problem w/ hens too?

I have my most outgoing friendly Dom "Jewlz" w/ the worst comb (fairly smooth, no ridges) and now showing uneven wattle growth too and her tail is way too long. Of course the juveniles aren't quite 41/2 months but I have one very nice sweet Dom w/ pretty comb/leader/U-back while I'm sure the two larger juvies would never make it through the entrance door at a show! But I like the comb and wattle differences for identification purposes when I'm trying to determine which girl is which.

No matter what their appearance, they are very good tempered chicks to have in our yard. They have the right amount of curiosity to explore/forage but still stay alert. Our Cuckoo Breda is skittish and will not venture to explore unless she is following another hen -- she rarely has assertiveness to hunt and peck unless she feels 100% secure in the shadow of another hen. Our former Blue Breda hen was more like the Dominiques in that she was curious, outgoing, unafraid, and people-friendly but the Cuckoo Breda must have inherited aloof Cuckoo Marans in her cross-breed history because she is very skittish.

I don't know which baby this is but have you ever had one decide to rub their head and beak on your shoes to wipe their face? I have so many smudges on my shoes from chickens' footprints and beak-wiping!

I never had the problem since I wear a small-brimmed Fedora hat when I go outdoors -- we have brutal sunshine here in SoCalif even in winter so I always wear a hat. Since I wear glasses the Dom chicks couldn't peck at my eyes but if I smile, to this day, they will peck at my teeth or accidentally bite my lip -- so I can't smile or show my teeth when I talk to them on my lap. Yesterday they were trying to chew the pearls off my Xmas vest and today they were playing w/ my housedress zipper. They know it's not food but they explore/test EVERYTHING! Very curious exploration drive in this breed.
