Dominique Thread!

I made a separate thread about this in the buy/sell/trade forum, but putting this out here just in case any Dominique lovers are interested:

I have a shipment of 25 straight run Dominique chicks arriving in August/September with more chicks than I need. If anyone is in the area (central Maryland), you are welcome to the extra ~10-15 chicks (free)! I can't guarantee any hens, Dominques are auto-sexing so I'll be keeping the hens I need, maybe 8-12 (plus a rooster or two) and someone could take all the extra chicks.

These chicks are from a breeder on the Dominique Club of America's directory, they are of great quality and have won awards. My intention is to start a dual-purpose, nearly self-sufficient flock with them, but they could also be used for showing (can't guarantee they will be show quality though). Let me know if any of you here are interested!

EDIT: I've had a quick talk with my family and they convinced me I'm underselling myself too much, so I've decided to go ahead and set the price to $3 a chick. But feel free to reach out with other offers!

So you are intending to breed your Doms as pure Doms? No cross-breeding? Wise to order from a private Dom breeder. I wish you were on this west coast rather than east coast cuz we LOVE Doms and we know how to select male from female chicks.

Newly hatched females have a tighter smaller white spot top of skull, dark shading going down the front of legs to top of toes, and the strip across top of beak is darker than the males. Males have broader white splashing on heads, no dark leg shading down front of legs and a little harder to notice is the lighter beak strip.

Female chicks -- as their body feathers start growing in the dark legs start fading but the beak strip stays into adulthood.

Show quality takes breeding 100 birds to get one or two decent show birds. TY for keeping this breed alive. They are one of the best breeds we've had -- as chicks very outgoing people-friendly talkative unafraid chicks yet fairly calm and sweet hens as adults.

The one Dom hen remaining in our flock has been great w/ our Silkies

Yes, the plan is to breed pure Doms! I want to breed more for egg/meat production, foraging capabilities, broodiness, etc, than show quality but still do plan to uphold the characteristics of the breed to the best of my ability. I'm very excited to get started, I've only heard good things about Dominiques. And thanks for the sexing guide! Auto sexing breeds are the best.

If there's anyway to get a copy of "The American Dominique: A Treatise for the Fancier" by Mark Fields you will find a wealth of history and breed standards for Doms. Last year I bought an Amazon downloaded copy for $14 cuz the hard copy was too expensive. Old book websites of it are even more expensive and rare to find. Well worth the read!

Cackle Hatchery enlisted Mark Fields in 1982 to perfect their Bantam Dominiques and Cackle still sells them to this day. Auto-sexing enables Cackle to sell male/female/straight run where other bantam breeds are sold straight run only.

I'd like some hatching eggs if you ever decide to sell any .I have a couple hatchery dom hens but don't have a dom roo thanks!
Unfortunately if I ever get around to selling hatching eggs, it'll probably be awhile down the road. I did a lot of looking around to find good Doms so I know the limited resources can be frustrating, but I will say that Nantahala Farm and Egg Well Farm both sell Dom hatching eggs and seem to be of reputable quality. I am also on a FaceBook page called American Dominique Chickens that frequently has Dom sales and trades as well, I would suggest joining if you're interested. Good luck on your search!
