Dominique Thread!

I don't think Sam has any at the moment, last time I talked to him he was down to just a few older birds but was going to get some more this year. Still worth checking though!

Centarchid, I have to disagree with you here... But I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree

You're welcome. I just got in from work; let my girls go to bed and I'll measure the one in the picture and let you know. But I don't think there's a formula for the ideal length of back, at least, not one size fits all, X inches long because the length of back should be in proportion to the bird. A.Q. Carter's standard allowed for hens to weigh between 5 to 5 & 1/2 pounds, so I don't select for weight as much as overall type.

Nancy, Fred Farthing also purchased some of Fields's birds, so if you want to try to keep in that strain I suggest you contact him. His contact info is I think still listed on the Dominique club web page. I think you'd have to go with shipped chicks or eggs but it's still worth a shot. Fertility was probably low from age

. Welcome to the thread!

Fred Farthing now has only the Heyman strain from Mark Feilds. Birds of that line are young. Fred's Heyman line seems to do well at show unless compared to Stichler's line of Halbach strain and judged by parties partial to the coarser look of a barred rock.

I acquired the last of his Voter line he had from Mark Feilds.

Despite advanced age, Voter hens still producing eggs but hatchability has declined. I will be lucky to get 20 chicks from the Voter hens sired by their 1/2 Voter nephew this year.

We went out about a month ago and from local farms set out to get laying hens for egg consumption. We started off with four hens that are proven layers and a roo. We didn't know it but the Roo turned out to be an American Dominique. I absolutely love this bird ! After we found out what he was being the research nut that I am I began learning everything there is to know about Dominiques and well we're getting a straight run order from Cackle Hatchery on the 13th.
Im really excited about the chicks arrival. Does anyone know with a straight run order what usually ends up being the ration on roo and pullet?
I hope to get a roo or two out of it, but want them mostly to be pullets.
Really glad I found this forum and this thread.....Awesome!
Thanks,
Tico

p.s. tried to post a 14 second video of my roo and it thought it was spam and wouldnt allow me to type in the youtube url?
Is there a reason for this and is there a way to fix this?

I think it's because you're a newer member and maybe you have to have x amount of posts before posting links? And you never know - theoretically it should be 50/50 but mother nature doesn't care about our plans!

The smaller the order of a strait run is, the more likely by random chance the ratio will deviate from 50:50. Last Dominique order I obtained from Cackle was for 10 pullets and 2 cockerols. They shipped 10 pullets and 3 cockerols.

Fred told me he isn't shipping chicks this year, maybe eggs, but you'd have to ask. You can always get started birds from him in the fall.

gallus, sorry I didn't get out and get the bird measured; DD showed up with a goat that she'd taken in for a C section. I'll do my best to get out there tonight.
