Alaskan is right. I would not breed brother to sister but you can father to daughter and mother to son. I am lucky to have quite a few Dominique lovers around here. I have a small hatch right now and plan on using the pullets to breed back to my roo. I am lucky I only have one Roo in this hatch left. If I dont sell him ...he will go to the freezer.

I rehomed my cockerel after I found out he was not a pullet because he kept mounting his sister. Brother to sister matings do not go well and weaken the strain's immune systems. Father to daughter or son to mother is better - but an unrelated mating is best for hardier resistance. That's just my 2 cents and JMHO.

This is my young Dominique rooster, Jefferson, and one of his girls,Marcy/D'arcy, ( I love married with children if you couldn't tell. And I'm 13. The show was WAY older than myself. And I love it

)his Nick name is Stupid, because we have a bobcat that has recently killed my aunts $70 goose and her Swedish duck so we got a traper getting the bobcat, and Jefferson won't come near any of us to catch him to put him at night.

( no more mad faces ) so he's all by himself. I'VE HAD ENOUGH ( Yes SHOUTY Caps Are Nessasary )


But he is pretty, just like the real Jefferson, but that's not going to help him

I am close to the girls, a red star and a Easter Egger, they are fine with being put up for the night. I just don't like their man very well, he doesn't Even protect them!! He is apparently just for show

How old is Jefferson? He may not be mature enough yet to take on or understand his role in the flock yet? Some chickens mature savvy as early as 18 months old and some are not mentally mature until well after 2 years old.

Sylvester017 We got all three of the free ranging chickens at the beginning of the year I know roosters are kinda like men they don't muture quickly. I just worry about his safety and it's getting colder here in Florida, thank God it doesn't snow here, but it's his own d@nm fault if he gets killed. (We have over 10 acres ) so he just hides when we try to get him. he does every thing else a rooster does, mating, that odd Flirty dance, calls them over for food, or just to get them away from me when I feed them mealworms, but he runs away when one of the ducks even come near the hens. So I always have to run the Drake's away.

It's NOT going to get cold enough in Florida to do him any harm. I had so free ranging cockerels, and I just waited til it got dark. They would roost on top of the coop run. Then just scoop them up and put them in.

Regin I know it won't get cold enough to hurt them, I've been around chickens all my 13 years, and have never left Florida before and some of the sweetest chickens I've had where roos. I've never actually seen snow before. It's the bobcat, who can jump up to 10 feet, I'm worried about . about he sleeps In The short trees taller than me,im 5'3, so I can't grab him at night and if he is on the porch he runs before I even get close. But the hens will jump in your lap.

Well I hope that bobcat doesn't get your boy! Doesn't seem like there's much you can do about it unless you keep him penned. Maybe just until the bobcat is taken care of.

You can make a T roost: attach a horizontal piece of wood to a vertical pole. When it gets dark, you can go out and put the T up in front of his feet. Press the T into his breast, and he should step onto the T, or fly down, you can then scoop him up, and put him in.
