My understanding is that in barred breeds, males get two copies of the “barring gene” and females get one. So males have thicker white bars resulting in an overall “lighter” appearance.Does the shade of their barring matter a lot? I've heard it is lighter in males. Pepper has lighter barring, as you can see.

) but I'm also sad. He was the tiniest little thing as a chick, and was the last to eat and drink. I cried many times those first few days because I feared he would die. But he didn't. And he kept getting more vibrant and bigger...and so did his comb. I can't keep him, city regulations...but I'm hoping he'll find a good home. He is a great flock defender so far, sounding alarms when a sparrow or two fly over, and chasing off squirrels and robins minding their own buisness. He's a spunky little guy.
