Dominiques

I think the only thing left is making the chicken door and adding the raccoon proof latches, lol. I have buckets I can use for nesting boxes. We have fence to put up and I have bought everything I can think of except for the chickens. I have a 2X4 for the roost, feeder, watered, feed and oyster shell, pdz and well....you get the picture.

Welcome to BYC!

We're glad to have you.

I hope you enjoy your future birds!

We brought the girls home about lunchtime......they already seem a bit more at ease than they did at first.....but I need some advice right off the bat. I was expecting all the ladies to be the same age and they are not. We were told the 2 larger hens are about 1 yo and already laying. 2 more are half that size and 1 is smaller yet. How do I feed them.....the largest 2 should have layer feed and the others ( I think) should have grower. I bought grower because I was expecting them all to be younger. Will it hurt the older to have grower feed for now....because I have read that the younger ones could have kidney problems if they are fed layer feed. Help!

Thanks! I already had grower feed and oyster shell.....I'll.pick up some grit later today. Three of them got out today for about an hour and then decided they wanted back in. Lol. My husband may put netting over the pen. I want to let them free range at least part time...but I would like know they are secure when in the pen. I have read that netting will help keep hawks out......any comments on that?

If the netting is secure, it will keep hawks out, but don't plan on it keeping any 4 footed predators out. Short of keeping them in a bubble, it's nearly impossible to keep chickens entirely safe from predators. If they have adequate cover, depending on the terrain, and the predator load, they actually may be safer free ranging than they would be locked up in a coop/run. Unfortunately, my flock is in a run right now b/c I'm trying to get a lawn seeded. They're very fond of that grass seed, and think all that bare ground is provided for their digging pleasure.

Lol.....I bet they would enjoy grass seed.

I have noticed that two of the "girls" have a different shaped tail and that the larger of those two has a brighter red comb than the others.......I wanted at least one roo and I'm thinking that I may have one. Victoria may really be Victor. However, the folks who sold them to me told me specifically that that chicken was at least a year old which means I would know if it was a rooster.....I wonder if they mixed it up with another one or why it seems different. I also wondered if they are full Dominiques and maybe a different breed is the reason for the differences. They all have the barred black and white, but some are a bit duller looking than others. One thing is for sure, time will tell if I have any roosters.
