Don't ask your elderly father what he wants for Christmas.....

I lost my mom after Christmas due to the same thing. My dad followed her two years later with prostate cancer.

HUGS.

My guess is he'll probably last to Christmas. Both my mom and dad held onto a specific date.

My great-grandmother was quite a character when she was still alive. Outspoken, foul-mouthed and entertaining when she was drunk. Thanks to her I know how to swear in Polish, Russian, Ukrainian and German.

She LOVED cheap whiskey, the more like rubbing alcohol, the better. SO, one Christmas my dad decided to get her some Crowne Royale whiskey ... the GOOD stuff. Well, she swore imprecations at it, then at my father and insisted we get the "real" stuff for her. So, my uncle and I had to go in search of an open liquor store at 8pm on Christmas Eve to get whatever God-awful brand of whiskey she consumed.

I am the same way! I treasure the thought behind it! I have a friend who gave a ton of necklace's, bracelet's and earring's for my birthday. This was some expensive stuff. She had a jewelry store that was going out of business. Everything was made out of different coral's and abalone shell. She told me it took her 2 hrs and 3 tries to get the gift bag the way she wanted it. 3 yrs later, the thing I still treasure most? This:

She put so much time and effort into to it and it meant a lot to me!

I have been asking my dad for 2 months (he's 73) what he want for Christmas. He just I don't need anything. I finally called him and said "Pop's, look you really need to help me out here, what can I get you for Christmas"? He has decided he want plastic license plate cover. So I will get him that and See's candy. Whew!

He could be like me. I told my kids I wanted chicken feed or a gift card for the feed store. For motherws day one year I told my kids I wanted dirt. Yes you heard right dirt. Top soil, manure, peat moss. Of course that was before I had chickens.

I never know what to get my dad, either. All he ever wants is flannel shirts, thick socks, and a box of those cheapo Queen Anne chocolate covered cherries from Walmart (milk chocolate, not dark chocolate... dad don't like dark chocolate). But dad likes homemade cookies and stuff like that, too, especially if it's wrapped all creatively and stuff.

He is 80 and likes to putter around in places like Orchard Supply Hardware, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc., so a couple of years ago we got him gift cards from Orchard and Home Depot, his two favorite places in the world.

Sheila, I want the same stuff you want for Christmas! I told my hubby and kids, I want a pressure canner and some canning jars and lids, some gardening gloves, and some bags of garden soil and/or compost for Christmas. My 26-year-old son cracked up..."Seriously, Mom? You want dirt?" Yep, that's what Mama wants for Christmas. Dirt.

Talk about having simple desires in life, eh? It doesn't get any simpler than "dirt."
