That looks a good bit bigger than the first tote but I still didn't see how many chicks you intend to house or for how long. How about this size?
I looked at it, and it does look ceramic. However I only have five chicks at most and am just looking to house them for a few hours so I can try and make them a better configuration. Would it work for that? That looks a good bit bigger than the first tote but I still didn't see how many chicks you intend to house or for how long.
You'll also want to look at your lamp and see if the part where the bulb screws in is ceramic. Desk lamps are often not suitable for 24/7 operation.

I have a similar set up. Put a thermometer inside to make sure your temp is right. Cut a hole and attach another box to that one which allows the chick's a place to go in case it gets to hot and they will stand where they feel comfortable. If it gets to hot and your not around they can and will move into the other box. It works
The first tote doesn't have a lid. What looks like a partial covering is actually just a reflection. I had the same confusion. But, it's really small. The second tote is a toy chest and I'm assuming the lid will stay open on it.I would not want to put such a top over that tote. You are not trying to build an oven. That will hold too much heat.
