Don't "kill" the messenger

Is anyone else getting a headache?!

I am so confused! All I know is I have really cool chickens!

Seriously though the reason for this is the FS or hatchery that pass along incorrect info and those of us who dont know any better (ME!) pass it on. This is why I really want to know so I am not teaching anyone else the wrong thing. So far I cant tell what category mine fall under. Probablly EE which like I said is fine with me!

Jean,
You are 100% right correcting any false information. It is very disappointing seeing a Junior Showman or 4-Her being ripped off by someone for a quick dollar and going to a show with sub-standard quality birds. Sorry, all you adults should know better and if you don't you need to go the Araucana.net and Ameraucana Club sites.
There is nothing wrong with owning EE's and they make great pets but they do not make great show birds. HS

You know, it's embarrassing, but until this thread, it never occurred to me (trusting -- or just naive -- soul that I must be) that if I went to the feed store and bought a day old chick that was said to be an Ameraucana that....it might not be......duh?????

Is that gonna be the same with all the birds I bought as day-old chicks? I'm not at all interested in showing them, or any of that stuff, but I also don't want to be spreading more mis-information. Supposedly I got 2 Ameraucanas, 2 Black Australorps, 2 Light Brahmas. What I'm getting from this thread is that very likely those are only going to be approximations of the breeds?

Just in case, I removed all information about what breeds I "have" from my profile. I know for sure that my trios of Cuckoo Marans and Bantam Salmon Favorelles will be "true" because I totally trust the woman I purchased them from. The rest of them???? Well, I guess we'll just call them "laying hens" and be done with it.

Susan, I'm sure most of the regular breeds you bought from the feed store are correctly labeled (possible exception: Barred Plymouth Rocks vs. Dominiques - don't get SpeckledHen started on THAT one!).

Usually, the only real mix-ups occur is when a customer or their kid picks up a chick to admire it, then sets it down again in the wrong bin.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Araucana's have no tail

Americauna's have to lay blue eggs.

Birds sold by hatcheries have tails and don't always lay blue eggs (and they usually advertise that). So they don't fit the 2 breeds. It's too bad that a lot of them advertise them as either or both but they don't fit either. There is nothing wrong w/EE's. EE's can lay a lot of different colors as a breed.

OK, I have a ? When people talk about "blue eggs" are the eggs blue like sky blue, or are you all talking about the lighter blue/green eggs? I've seen some darker green, that I would think people are talking about when they say green. I've never seen a really blue egg.

One thing that would really help clear all of this up, is holding the hatcheries accountable for their advertising. They shouldn't be selling EEs as "Ameraucanas". I am surprised that the hatcheries are still getting away with this practice!

OK, Folks, here's my chance to ask an Ameraucana question:

Why isn't splash a recognised color for Ameraucanas? Black is, and blue is, so why not splash?

I know that if I bred 2 splash birds, I wouldn't get all splash offspring, but that's the case with blue as well. Yes?

Please someone help me to understand this. I just don't get it.
