Don't "kill" the messenger

Yeah, I'd be pretty upset if this happened with other animals... like if I bought a Rottie and got a Dobe instead! Or a norwegian giant rabbit instead of a dwarf lop!! Allthough.... sometimes pet stores try to sell anoles as chameleons. But I think there is a lot of confusion because of the hatcheries. They really should be honest in their listings. It makes people believe that what they say is how it is. They probably feel that people will recognize the name and be looking for blue/green eggs.... so they probably figure it's a win/win.

I know that as embarassing as it would be, I'd rather be set straight than spend the rest of my life sounding like a fool

Egg color is still a problem with ameraucanas.

There are hens that lay a sky blue egg which in time looks pretty white at the end of the laying season.

There are hens that lay a blue/green and some that lay a minty green which are all very acceptable by club standards.

What we are trying to get away from is obvious green and khaki.

I have some birds that lay what I call turquoise which is to me equally blue and equally green, I like the color.

Eggs can also look different colors in different light. Some of it is "In the eye of the beholder".

In the above picture, these are the colors I prefer. There is a brown in the middle for contast. They look a little brighter than the picture below because of the contrasting color of the towel under them.

Here is another picture of some lighter blue and minty eggs.

And here is a picture with some green eggs on the top.

I was glad to be straightened out when I got to this forum. I got my chickens at an auction. They were sold as Ameraucanas and are actually EE's. It doesn't make any difference to me since they are so cute and I love them and all the colors of their eggs. But at least I know what to tell people I have.

Whoa, whoopeee, and woot !!!!

Excellent article !!!!
Thank you for posting it !!!

I really was completely ignorant about the Ameraucana issue. Problem is, now I'm gonna want some "real" ones:lol: I wonder what the chance is of my waiting until next year.....Sigh....

Nothing wrong with Easter Eggers, but I like knowing what I have and I never would want to misrepresent a breed, even innocently. I was fortunate to be able to have blue and black Ameraucanas and I still have one blue Ameraucana hen I adore plus six Ameraucana eggs in the bator out of Cree lines due to hatch next week out of blue over blue, so I could get blue, black or splash. My Ameraucana hen is an excellent layer of light blue eggs and has the sweetest disposition. I debated keeping a cockerel from this hatch after selling my other rooster and right now I dont think I will, but it's still tempting. Great breed, the Ameraucana.

I have an EE hen who lays green eggs I love her she is so nice and sweet but has no beard she lays an egg almost every day and she just started laying! On Sunday I am getting two wheaton amerucana pullet and I am really exited I will have blue eggs, green eggs, # 5 marans eggs, and light brown eggs.

Those Marans eggs are gorgeous! I just saw them for the first time in the last issue of Backyard Poultry. I would love to have those. Hmmmm.

I love my marans hen two she is really sweet and her eggs are beautiful when she lays them she hasn't layed this week but thats because she is just starting.

pips&peeps :

I like the idea of coming up with a new name for EE's. Maybe it would be something fun to start.

I was looking for someone else who wanted another names for the things. Thank you, Jean!

I don't mind so much that the birds the hatchery & feed store said were Ameraucanas weren't quite that. I don't mind that my first chicks are of mixed lineage and are mutts. They're lovable mutts and I look forward to seeing their eggs.

But I just hate the name Easter Eggers. I have high hopes that they'll lay all year, not just at Easter.

And I have NO hopes that their eggs will have pretty flowers or geometric designs. Besides, it's an awkward phrase.

So... what is a better name for the little darlings? Pastels? That sounds sweet, and describes the eggs if not the birds. Come on, folks, I know there are some creative minds out there.
