I am sorry...for your loss. I know how hard it can be to lose a favorite one. I lost my Clara yesterday...and it was weird going into the coop this morning.

Oh, I am sooo sorry. We have a run that our chickens do not use..it was not covered and they flew out.

Well, after reading all the posts on hawks it scared me into covering the coop with ...of all things...yarn with cd's strung on them ...in a separate thread in a few minutes...I know this time of year is when they really look for an easy meal. My chickens always free range and I like them to be able to do that. I have one pullet that comes to me and let's me pick her up...she watches t.v. with me..well she naps, I watch t.v. and if I were to lose her I couldn't stand it so I appreciate what you are going through. I am so very sorry.

Thank you all. For once I had a free few minutes this afternoon so I went out to the barn. I could hear them all rioting inside the barn. As I got nearer a red-tailed hawk flew from a tree right outside the barn door.

He screamed as he took off, like he was frustrated. I did a head count and all were there, except poor Uno, of course. We've had chickens for over two years and we have NEVER had hawk problems like this. Usually we can count on the hawks hanging around in the fall and maybe getting a chicken, maybe not...but they always go away as the chickens start spending more time inside. We are going to try the hanging cd's. Paganfish, I am sorry about Clara, too. What happened to her? I know what you mean about it feeling weird to go back in...I just dreaded it.

You know I had forgotten that; I've read that, too, that female raptors are usually bigger. But, Hannibal the cannibal sounds better....
