Some people think the Constitution is set in stone. There are many phrases that can be interpreted in different ways. Some sections are very specific. Others like the general welfare clause is completely up to interpretation. If it was set in stone like Chick and some others think it is they wouldn't have a need for Federal courts.

In a freely elected democracy, I think the power lies with the electorate and not the polititions. Governments can be brought down by the electorate it has happened in many places, including here. If the people think the government does not represent them fairly, or has gone back on election promises, do the people not protest?

The Constitution gets re-interpreted every time some want it to support their idea, is that the fluidity they mean? like pornography is protected speech or however it is connected as an example or some how one can disgrace an American flag and in turn say the Constitution protects that? Funny it cannot protect the most vulnerable of our society.

The livey breathey doctrine is one view and does not happen to be mine or a large part of other Americans as witnessed by the last election cycle.

On the subject of healthcare funny nobody that ran on that platform got re elected.

If we had a parlimmentary system in the US, all the smaller groups would have more of a voice, and the two big parties wouldn't have to play to the radicals on either side. I think far more would get done. The tea partiers, the greenies, the libertarians etc would all get some representation, and the two big parties would get back to their core values. I think we would also end up with a Christian Conservative party that was all about social issues not fiscal issues. Corporate and special interest voices would also have less pull in this sort of system.

But in the US we do not have proportional representation. We have a winner takes all system. There are no coalition governments and the little voices get drowned out.

I think in the coming decade or so, while the baby boomers are still voting, the Republican party will split, into a social party and a fiscal party. I don't have anything to base this on other than a gut feeling and the growing dissent within the party. When the boomers stop voting by dying off, the socially conservative party will collapse. The younger generation in this country won't be interested in arguing about gay marriage, abortion and prayer in schools. JMHO.

I think you may be right, people do change, what is written as history does not change even the Constitution.

We are supposed to be a representative government where the little guy is not drowned out but thanks in part to re interpretation of the Constitution or just plain ignoring it we have a system that mob rules through the ballot box. Some issue should not be voted on that is what REPRESENTATIVES were supposed to be for and do ... not send lewd photos. (picked this one because it is current)

The breast cancer patients TOO OLD to save: Thousands are being denied surgery by 'ageist' doctors

Fact. This country is for all intents and purposes broke. We simply cannot afford to provide "free" healthcare to everyone in this country who wants/needs it. There is every reason to believe that rationing, which will deny the elderly life-saving care, will most certainly take place in this country should "Obamacare" not be repealed. It's happening in Great Britain as we speak.

Note - in the Daily Mail article, it's not just women in their 70's being denied, it's women in their 50's. How many 50-somethings are being killed off, women who should have another 30 good years, given the opportunity for treatment?

My 50-something cousin just went through a double mastectomy not 8 weeks ago. I thank heaven she's American.

And, oh by the way, how many of you have ever seen photos of what untreated breast cancer does to a woman before it kills her? If you can look at such photos, without feeling sick, you have a far stronger constitution than do I.

Maybe she should thank heaven she had insurance....

Health care is already rationed in this country. Insurance companies limit the medications and procedures they will pay for, they limit the number of x-rays allowed for injuries, and when you can see a specialist. There is also economic rationing of health care, with the poor not receiving the same care as better off people. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office says that health care reform will save money, a whole lot of money. Here's the short version, followed by the whole danged thing....

CBO and the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) estimate that enacting both pieces of legislation will produce a net reduction in federal deficits of $143 billion over the 2010-2019 period
