Don't understand the importance of "non GMO"

The USDA website has moved or removed many of the relevant documents, and I'm far to lazy to track them down... You will find them still reference in Google and on many other sites with quotes, but the USDA site itself has many 404 page not found errors...

Here is one though, from a FOIA request, scroll down to their reply on the page 5...

Thus we apply legal logic, if the USDA has no authority to regulate mutanenic products then they can not regulate their exclusion in organics...

This write up has a lot of reference links, scroll to about page 25, but again many links are not dead, even those on the USDA site... But, it eludes to multiple letters like the above where the USDA has stated they have no authority to regulate mutant crops...

Also as a simple verifiable proof, go back to my previous post in regards to the Rio Red (Rio Star) Grapefruit (Google it's history) it is in fact a product of radiation exposure and mutation, yet it's readily sold as organic as long as it was grown by organic standards... Just wait until this fall, you can find them labeled as 'certified organic' all over the place, even at Whole Foods, LOL...

Reminds me of the magic of Colchicine... All natural from my autumn crocus, magic polyploidy mutations for getting female seed... That's why I changed my major to agronomy lol... No, "Dolly" clones and eating corn with BT toxins meant to blow up bugs from the inside just weren't my cup of tea

I really have nothing scientific to add to this discussion, although it has been a very interesting (and courteous) one. Hope it stays that way after this post!

But I wonder......Look around you every day. See all of us old folks? Lots of us? Guess what food producing era we belonged to? In my case, sure, we ate a lot from Ma's garden. But we lived out in the country surrounded by corn and soybean fields and some of our neighboring farmers used crop dusting planes to spread whatever on those surrounding fields. I doubt seriously if every molecule they were spraying - either by plane or by sprayers on tractors - respected the property lines and stayed on their own side of the fence. In fact, Ma and Dad counted on overspray to keep pests down in our garden - they couldn't afford to buy fancy chemicals to do it themselves. For meat we had what we got from hunting or fishing. I rarely remember store bought meat of any kind gracing our table. Guess what those deer, pheasants, quail, ducks, geese, elk and rabbits ate? Yep, stuff from sprayed fields.

I don't have two heads. I don't have any serious health issues. How in the world have so many of us old geezers managed to live so long without all of this "help"? Somewhere in a hospital right now there is a 40 year old looking at the ceiling and wondering how this happened to him - he ate only "organic" "non GMO" foods, maintained a diet that was gluten free, sugar free, salt free, avoided red meat, drank only purified water and never smoked a cigarette. He used his Vita-mix and made fresh, organic vegetable juice every morning. He uses only "natural" products for cleaning around the house and yet there he is.......and here I am.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if any one person wants to jump on the old "the big world is out to kill us all" bandwagon, then by all means, go for it. Buy organic, or non-GMO, and all natural whatever. But use common sense when quoting ritual from one side or the other. If I've learned anything at all in 65 years on this planet it's that I can always find a study, a paper, an article, a news story or a website that validates just my own opinion. I don't even have to look at those which are contrary to that opinion if I don't want to. Just as I would never presume to tell you that your strong feelings on the subject are wrong in any way, I shouldn't be subjected to guilt trips if I decided to spend my meager income on whatever I can afford regardless of what the label says. I've lived by one simple creed - my rights end where your toes begin. Oh, and non-organic, GMO white bread.

I was a treehugging vegan PETA member... Ok I'm still a treehugger lol... But now I hunt, eat meat, etc... Lol I wanted to feed the world organic beefcand corn and live all happy having made a " difference"..

Truth is, I can't. Companies like Monsanto and Cargill RUN the seed industry and I can't afford to feed the world.

I feed my own. It's all I can do; set this land up for my grandkids, teach my children how NOT to destroy the soil, how to be INDEPENDENT and not HAVE to go buy white GMO bread; they can MAKE it from the field like ma did

It pretty much boiled down to selling my folks on turning organic... Money. Profit. Ease of farming and that almighty dollar. We make twice as much per ton on organic hay over non. It's the profit. Sorry to say, honestly, most farmers are going to do what brings in the money. Right now, preying on ignorance and mass hysteria over BT toxin seems to have driven the profit over cost basis for growing organic UP.

It's WORTH it to grow it now, because most of the younger generation are buying it, AT A PREMIUM. I still get picked on by my folks though, all my organic hooha, but they don't pick on me come time to sell

Oh BTW, my dad? 72, has a hernia, gout, anthrax flares up, can't sleep more than 2 hours, inhaled AA and played with RUR corn... Still out there arguing with my mom about their idiot daughter and her stupid GMOs

I am a middle aged environmental student studying Geography. I have driven past the wasteland in Idaho that is a Monsanto plant....I will stay firmly planted in the "local organic is best" camp. The reason I would like to feed non-gmo is because I want to vote with my dollar against Monsanto. They tout their programs as sustainable but their business practices are not small farmer friendly and are actually detrimental for tiny farmers that cannot afford their patented seeds and round up side dish. I want less chemicals in my body and even less in my grandkids bodies. I think that anyone that portrays Monsanto as the good guy has a financial interest in some way shape or form in them or at least their tactics. That is the only thing I can figure out since no normal person would want a single company in control of so much of the worlds food.
My personal opinion is that one half of the world power wants to control the fuel but the other 1/2 wants to control the food and the rest of us are at both their mercy if we don't stand up and fight or at least vote with our dollars.

I see folks searching for the $$$ non-GMO feed for chickens. Why? I found this article.
Eggs in their natural state — in their shells — are not a genetically modified (GM), or bioengineered food. In fact, neither chickens nor eggs are genetically modified. Only traditional breeding techniques are used to raise laying hens in the United States; neither chickens nor eggs are modified by genetic engineering. So if nothing gets transferred to the meat or eggs, what am I not being told? I want healthy eggs that don't cause cancer or glow in the dark. No hormones or antibiotics.

Eating GMO feed means they may not be getting the same nutrition as from non-GMO feed. We're still learning the consequences.
