You can do it any way you want. If you feel better about keeping a hen to live out the remainder of her days, then by all means, keep her! There are many people who do that.

Don't let this one thing scare you away from chickens! They are wonderful pets, if you choose to make them your pet. Besides, what other "pet" makes you breakfast every morning?!?!

I have zero intention of eating my laying hens. They probably wouldn't taste that good anyways.
