Sometimes folks hear that it is easy, then learn different. Takes them to the books, researching on the net, and really learning about poultry, and even up getting into breeding very nice birds, and keeping them as they should be kept. They may have started out slow, but they learned.

There's one thing that doesn't belong in a house in my opinion, and that is a duck. Any bird for that matter, but especially a duck. I'll put their butts outside on day 1 if it's warm enough. If not, on day 2.

I reasearched a lot too! I told my friends that i really liked ducks and wanted one. At one of my B-day parties this girl gets in late and has a bucket. Of course its a duckling, no permission from my parents or anything just brings it in..i wasnt even prepared for it so i spent like half of the time making a small pen for it. It was a jumbo pekin and looked to be like 2 weeks old but my mom and dad insisited that it didnt need a lamp because it was big. I left the next day for family..so it sucked..but now im going to be prepared for this next hatch!

O my goodness! I hope she cleared that with your parents first! That's a big commitment to make at the drop of a hat! I bet you were happy though

I researched like crazy when i decided I wanted ducks. My mother bought my daughter chicks without telling me so it was a scramble to keep them alive and I didn't want to go through that again so I researched for 2 months about ducks. I read almost every book that was suggested to me, I lurked the ducks forum here, and looked up so many websites that it drove my husband crazy hearing what I had learned every day. Boy was I still not prepared for what they were in real life! you can learn are read and talk to people till you are blue but until you have them you just don't know. I have to say that I got used to the smell and had a clock work of changing litter 3 times a day that worked but I was still super sad when it was time to put them out. My second group was easier but it was warmer so they got more outside time than the first group and the third group lived outside almost from the time we got them because it is so hot here and so that they would all be used to each other and the flocks mixing would go smoother and the pools could be shared easier. I still want a house duck but that is for when I can incubate and try an experiment I read about a couple weeks ago to have them better imprinted on me
