Double frizzled?

I don’t think it’s possible to tell by just looking at such a young bird, unless the seller knew both parents were frizzled.

I do think she may be a silkie/cochin mix. The bit of foot that I can see looks black.
this bird is quirky. She does backflips every time I attempt to help her into the coop. She’s from a feed store which gets from a hatchery. Not sure which hatchery though. The Barred bantam Cochin beside her in the pic I got from the same batch. I’ll try to get a good pic of feet but I don’t remember extra toes or dark skin as a chick.

The pictures show the difference in the feathering of a Frizzle and a Frazzle. It’s a bit hard to see but my first picture the feathers are rounded and slightly curled on the Frazzle the feathers are pointed and more curled. I’ve worked with chickens for a while now and I worked with the Frazzle I posted. At the same time the Frazzle pullet was at the farm there were also Frizzle pullets and the difference was very apparent. The op’s bird’s feathers are identical to the Frazzles and a Frizzle would have rounded feathers that aren’t so narrow and pointed.

Jane is beautiful, but she could just be better bred.
I have a couple that look pretty ragged when they are molting or even partial molt, and I know for a fact that both parents were not frizzled. But if you are confident, then I’ll trust your impression. :)

The cross doesn’t always end up with extra toes, but the dark skin is dominant. Also, I think the “limp” looking feathers could be because of the cross, but I’m totally guessing from a single pic. It’s hard (for me) to be certain.

Hatcheries usually don't sell frazzled chicks, they usually put frizzled roosters over smooth hens. You usually get frazzles from inexperienced backyard breeders who don't know what they are doing.

@WVduckchick, my Avatar has a black tinge to his feet. I think it is a fault in the Murray McMurray Cochin line. Don't mind the weird middle toe, he got frostbite over the winter.

Thank you! Jane has come a long way since I rescued her from the farm I worked at 4 months ago. She looked like an ex battery hen. :(
I’m pretty sure the op’s bird is a Frazzle. From other posts regarding Frazzles and the pictures I’ve seen of peoples’ Frazzles they all have those characteristic narrow curled feathers.

Black cochins can have dark overtones, but I still see light color under the surface on yours. It’s what the standard calls “swarthy”. I agree the hatcheries are usually better about not mixing frizzles.

all my first gen silkie crosses have the extra toes and a darker skin, not as dark as silkies. I do have a Cochin silkie cross with light skin. He’s a real cutie.

I wish I could find a pic of one of mine, right before or after a molt. I think you would swear she is frazzled. She just wasn’t bred very well. But her offspring have been much better when bred with better males.

This is a picture of Jane when I got her

So what would a Frazzled bird look like then if the op’s bird isn’t frazzled?

It could be a frazzle. I’m just saying I wouldn’t make a judgement until later in its life, if I don’t know it’s parents for sure. Frazzles will usually look worse after a molt. The feathers get brittle when they get both doses, I think.

I will also say that I’m on the side that thinks not all frizzle x frizzle matings result in frazzles. Some people still cross them to be sure they get curly feathered offspring. Some get double dose, but some still get single dose. *i think*

Sorry, it’s been a long time since I researched them. I decided I didn’t want to mate 2 frizzled birds, but I do remember finding info that supports that they don’t all end up frazzle/brittle feathers.

That last bit is very interested.
Sorry if I’ve exhausted you with my rebuttals
