Double Yolker Extravaganza...is this normal?!

My ladies lay double yolkers occasionally when they first started laying, but I haven't gotten any for a while. Maybe it takes a while for their bodies to figure out what they are doing.

Eggzile, that was really cool! thanks for putting the link in - I just didn't think the egg would hatch - have to say watching the video was nerve-wracking.
thanks!

No really they do get the cracked corn and I also have them on layer pellets from Tractor Supply and they get oyster shell and lots of treats.

Thanks for posting that link from needmorechickens. I wonder if double yolkers could be hatched out by a broody hen, or would they need help?

Onebuggirl, I will tell hubby that double yolkers may make his man-parts fall off that way I can eat them all.

I have a question about double yolk eggs, are they bigger than normal eggs? We recently got some standard couchins (sp) and the first egg (yesterday) was huge, it was bigger than our store bought brown eggs! Today I went out to get the eggs and they were all the same size as our Rhode Island Reds. My grandma ate the egg last night and said it was a double yolker. So will double yolk eggs be larger than single from the same chicken?

Does anybody have hens a year old or older that still throws double yolkers? I have one hen that has pretty much laid at least a few doubles during each laying cycle and it seems to be continuing even though she's older than one by now. None of her full and half sisters ever laid any doubles. I was going to put her up for sale but if she continues this into old age.. maybe I should keep her.. see if it might be genetic..(doubt it, but...)

To the person who asked- in my hen's instance, the double yolkers plainly are very much larger than singles by several inches.

Yup I see that a lot here too. I get at least one double per day out of 16 laying currently...some days I get two or three of them. LOL
