Hi everyone -

Question - my hens started laying about 2 weeks ago. Right now, only 4 or 5 are laying, 20 aren't laying yet (but soon, hopefully). My question - for 5 out of the last 6 days, I've gotten one huge egg, which turns out to be a double yolker. I haven't figured out which hen's doing it, but the egg is 2 - 3 times the size of the other eggs - so big that I can't close the top on the egg carton! Is it normal to get so many double-yolk eggs in a short period of time?

the girls - 5 red stars, 4 black stars, 5 light brahmas, 4 barred rocks, 4 buff orphingtons, 3 white cochins - and one naughty little Polish roo named Tina.

It's perfectly fine. You're girls just started so haven't quite gotten the egg thing down yet. When they get older, usually that stops but you may still get some every once in a while.

Yup... enjoy them while you get them! My RIR/mix layed double yolkers at first as well. Now...at 1 1/2 yrs old...im lucky to get an agg a day from each of them. Im thinking heat has alot to do with it. Heat index is 100+ ! Lucky you!

Rooster-red - do you know which of your hens is laying the doubles? With my hens, I'm 75% sure it's a red star, but it could be a barred rock, too.

Mary
