Friday evening I was outside and I heard a bunch of flapping and feathers going everywhere I ran over picked my cat up by the scruff and put her inside while giving her a lecture I went back outside and I found a dove (morning dove) that the cat had been chasing fortunately she was not majorly injured but there was a little blood but so many feathers from one wing had been pulled out so that she could not fly! I stuck the dove in a small crate with some food, water, and bedding in it over night. The next morning I put her in an even larger crate attached to the small crate and put some perches inside of the crate. I feel bad for the poor girl and will let her go when she is able to fly again but meanwhile she is terrified of me and freezes every time she catches sight of anyone. I will try to post updates every once in a while and any name suggestions and advice is appreciated also!

I would keep up with the water and seeds. How is she today? From what I see, she did shock molt her tail, so she will be growing in a new one soon. When doves get scared they sometimes won't fly off right away and they shock molt off their tail.

she is doing pretty good I went and read a book near her cage for awhile and she finally moved around a bit. Do you have any idea how long it will take for her feathers to regrow? I am willing to keep her until she is fully recovered but I'm just wondering cuz google is not helping a bit!

I wonder if, like chickens, it won't happen till her next regular molt? I slso wonder if she wouldn't be better off with a licensed wildlife rehabber, somebody who (no offense) actually knows what they're doing and what she needs? Someone, for example, with a dedicated aviary where she can nest and have plenty of room to roost up high as is natural and eventually have room to fly... safe from cats.

I will look into that! :thumbsup

Mourning doves are native birds who do best in the care of wildlife rehabbers, they are easily stressed in captivity. That cage also doesn’t look like it’s safe for outdoor use unless you’re supervising closely the entire time she’s out there.
